hello, this sounds like a problem possibly caused by adware on your pc. please go to firefox > addons > extensions & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and run a full scan of your system with the security software that you have in place and different other tools like the free version of malwarebytes & adwcleaner.

Thanks Philipp, but I've already check extensions and run a malwarebytes scan, without finding this junk. That is my problem....can't remove it if I can't locate or identify it.

A google search only brings up stuff from cjb.net, itself, which seems only designed to confuse.....make sure you can't uninstall it

if their is problem of automatically opening of some tabs you can try following method which may resolve problem and you not lose any data

1. Firefox orange button>help>Troubleshooting Information

2. Under Application Basics, click Open Containing Folder

3. there will be prefs.js, user.js and sessionstore.js

4. Delete all 3 files

5. restart and done.

Hi JConchie, regarding the above suggestions, add-ons sometimes store data in prefs.js and sessionstore.js contains your currently open windows/tabs (or after you close Firefox, your previous session windows/tabs). You might want to rename or move those files in case you need to salvage data from them later rather than simply deleting them.

Hi JConchie, could you describe the problem in more detail? What triggers the additional tabs: starting up Firefox, creating a new window, creating new tabs, visiting certain sites, simple passage of time, etc.?

For startup and new window issues, check your home page settings to make sure a second tab hasn't sneaked in: How to set the home page.

Regarding extensions, did you find that you don't have any, or do you recognize and trust each of them? I suggest disabling ALL nonessential extensions during this diagnostic period. By nonessential I mean you could survive 24 hours without them.

Hi manidhwn:

  • prefs.js: Some add-ons accumulate data in Firefox preferences, which are saved in prefs.js. Two examples are the NoScript extension, every time you approve a site to run scripts it is added to a preference, and my Google Hit Hider userscript, which similarly stores blocked sites in a Firefox preference. Because I've been building these lists during all of the years I've used these add-ons, and there is no backup (it's tricky to set up Sync for extension preferences), I'm a bit sensitive about blowing away that data.
  • sessionstore.js: Some users restore their session day after day, assuming that Firefox securely saves their tabs, never bothering to bookmark sites. If their session data is deleted, they post impassioned appeals about losing years of work. With the benefit of hindsight, it's not the best strategy, but folks do not appreciate the fragility of the system.

Because it's hard to know how posters use these files, it's generally safer to recommend moving/renaming than deleting.

It's also unclear what happens when Firefox does its shutdown and these files have been removed. Firefox might re-create the files using the preferences stored in memory and currently open windows/tabs. I haven't tested.

Renamed two of the .js files to Old.....did not have a users.js. and restarted, then left FF open for a while. When I came back, the default open tab had been hijacked to cjb.net, and it had opened a second tab, also to cjb.net. If I leave FF alone, it will keep opening additional tabs periodically, without stop.

No extensions/addons with strange names, and all that are there are stuff I loaded by choice. This thing is buried deep somewhere. Anybody able to find any reference to getting rid of this by googling cjb.net from a clean machine?

CJB appears to be a domain registrar. I doubt they are trying to generate traffic themselves.

Possibly some malware or add-on is trying to load a site that was registered with CJB but the site is redirecting to the registrar page for some reason. As a test when you are taking a break, try disabling redirects here to see whether any intermediate pages load in these tabs:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > General

Check the box for "Warn me when websites try to redirect or reload the page"

Make sure your connection settings are not using an unexpected network.

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Network

Click the "Settings" button and choose either No Proxy or Use system settings. You probably need to restart Firefox before that takes effect.

Have you noticed this issue in any other browsers (e.g., IE) when visiting the same sites?

External programs may launch pages in new window or tabs, but changing an existing tab -- if not driven by the site itself -- typically indicates a problem add-on. I suggest disabling ALL extensions and ALL plugins (other than Flash) as a quick way to rule out whether any of those could be involved.

Jscher Followed both your suggestions.....my system was already set to "use system settings for the proxy, so I changed that to "no proxy"

Going to leave FF alone for awhile to see if it reoccurs.....if so, will disable extensions and plugins and then reenable one by one to see if I can isolate it. In any case, will report success/failure when I'm finished with all that...probably tomorrow.

It popped up a cjb tab a minute or so after I wrote the above. Going to disable all extensions and plugins, then add them back in at 20 min intervals to see if I can isolate this.

@jscher2000 this is good information about sessionstore.js and prefs.js. After saving these files at other place or rename those files then after deleting those files and restarting the firefox if we find preferences are lost of some add ons, then can we use those files as backup to get back preferences.
