If Firefox doesn't find the Java plugin then it is possible that the Java installer didn't create the required registry key that Firefox checks to scan for plugins.

Did you try to run the Java installer as Administrator?

Hi iamjayakumars, I have to admit a lot of what you said to try goes way over my head because even though I use computers at work, I know just enough basics, etc. Like I said, after I un-installed some older programs and went back to my plug-in page to install again. It seems to finally have taken. I won't know if it's actually working yet because I don't play games all that often only when I'm on Messenger with a friend. Now my add-on page shows Java Deployment Toolkit 7.0.100.18 10.10.2.18 but it does not show anything about a Java Platform. Is it supposed too? My plug in page says it is now up to date and also only shows Java Toolkit, etc.. My installed programs shows Java 7 Update 10 as well. I was just puzzled that the Java test page doesn't indicate Java working on my computer even though everything else is telling me it's been successfully uploaded. The only other thing Java related in my installed programs shows something called JavaFX2.1.1 which I have know idea what it does or if it's an old version needing taken off, etc. I use Firefox 8. I don't even want to update anymore to newer versions of FF because twice when I did it in the past I lost my browser. A friend through Messenger in another country sent me a version and talked me through the install. I still have it saved just in case. Which was strange since I lost my browser that Messenger even worked for me. Also when I used to update to a new FF version, things would change, things would disappear and it was just a hassle. So if it's because I have an older FF that's causing the problems, well... If you could answer a few of the questions I posed, I'd appreciate it.

Ok, first, alot of the problems you are having is because you are using Firefox 8, not upgrading to newer versions leaves you vulnerable to MAJOR security holes online. Please update IMMEDIATELY. You won't lose your browser.

Then, go to Java.com and download and install Java 7 update 10, you want the JRE, not the Java Development Kit.

Update your Firefox. Java problem with Firefox 8

Okay, I went to Firefox update site and it did it without anything happening this time. It gave me Firefox 12 which according to the site is the latest I guess. Considering I was using 8 that's a jump. I'm going to uninstall the Java 7 Update 10 in my programs and go back to the plug-in page and update again from there and I guess I'm supposed to get the JRE and not just the toolkit this time. I'll see what happens. But I would still like to know what the one program JavaFX2.1.1 is and if I should un-install that as well. Thanks!

Well I might, but it's late and I've got a headache now from all of this but I did uninstall again and re-installed and I still get it showing up only the Java Deployment Toolkit 7.0.100.18 10.10.2.18. I do not have the Java (TM) Platform Plug-in anymore to even enable it in my add-ons. I'm assuming this is the JRE that was referred to previously in one of the posts. It disappeared when my plug-in page said I needed to update and I did and had all this trouble. I've been searching and can't figure out how to get the Java Platform to add to my add-ons, it just shows up Java Console older version. Any ideas as how to get it?

I've mentioned in my above posts that that is where I do check my plug-in updates. And now it says everything is up to date but someone on here just told me I needed to have the JRE too which I guess is the Java (TM) Platform plug-in. You can't ask any questions on that page so I'm confused as to what you mean by providing the website I'm checking for Java. According to Mozilla Plug-in page I'm now updated with Java Version 7 Update 10 but I do not have the Java Platform in my add-ons. I guess I'm suppose to have that too. So I do not know how to get it. That was my next question.

This is for Tylerdowner, Okay, I'm going to ask you now because I'm totally confused. I updated Firefox and it now has me up to version 12. Uninstalled and re-installed Java at Java.com and you can only go to the free download site and the latest version which is Version 7 Update 10. When that's down my plug-in page and everything in my computer tells me I have that version. But in my add-ons and plug-in page there is only the Java Deployment toolkit 7.0.100.18 showing up, that's all that appears after you update to the new version. Ok, follow these steps exactly:

Firefox 12 is not the latest, you need to run the update again to install Firefox 17.0.1 (and in the future keep installing more updates as they are released). Update Firefox to the latest release and Firefox just updated - why is it asking me to update again?.

Then, I need to do these steps exactly:

1. Uninstall everything related to Java on your computer, Java 7 if you have t, JavaFX, the JDK, JRE, anything that says Java.
2. Restart your PC
3. Then, download http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=71835. Close Firefox, then install this file.
4. Restart your PC again, does java work?

Well, I'll even have to see if my computer can update to that latest version another person here told me that as well. In that site it said that people who have the original XP Windows and such may not be able too and mine is an older computer that was given to me. I have no idea what version of XP I have. I never pay attention when I turn my computer on because usually I'm in another room. So, if it does let me do that I'll follow your suggestion. Thanks

You have windows XP, so long as you have Service Pack 2 or later (you should have service pack 3 actually) you can install firefox 17.0.1.

Just so you know, running that old of a Firefox for any amount of time is going to leave you open to a few dozen security holes that are being exploited in the wild right now. Update is quick and easy and you should do that now.

Well I must have been lucky so far. But I use Avast and so far haven't run into anything bad. But I was going to go try and do everything now and see what happens. I did go and check and do have service pk. 3. Because I do have on my automatic updates and do install those all the time. But, as far as Firefox update is concerned, when I went to the About Firefox page and went to update it through there, it only took me to version 12. Which the other person told me is because it only goes step by step. How am I supposed to know that? In the past when i did update it, it was because I got a pop up window from there telling me to go to that version. How do I get updates then to tell me what really is the latest for Firefox? Thanks.

Yes, the first time you go to about Firefox when you are running as old of a version as you had, it will update you to 12, then you need to go to about Firefox again and it should pull Firefox 17.0.1 and install that. If that doesn't work, then just go to getfirefox.com, and download and install Firefox over your existing install to update it.

Okay, I did everything you said. I've got the LATEST version of FF and followed your instructions. Now after uninstalling and re-installing. I checked my computer and not only the Mozilla plug in page but my add-on manager where it lists the plug-ins and it still only shows the Java Development Toolkit 7.0.100.18 10.10.2.18 plug-in. Mozilla plug-in page indicates everything's up to date AGAIN! But when I went to the Java test page it not only doesn't detect it but said to view content I needed to add the plug-in which was the Version 7 Update 10 I just did. So as I was adding the plug-in per Java's request, it said it was already installed and do I want to replace it and I said yes. So it still only shows the Toolkit and maybe that's all that's supposed to show to begin with. So I'm about done for today. Have to get ready to go to a Xmas party w/another headache again from doing all this. Thanks anyway! It's a funny thing though, when I had installed the latest version, Mozilla plug-in page didn't agree but the Java test page did. Now that everything is updated Java doesn't agree.
