I was currently using windows and utilising the word program. But I have crossed over to the dark side and am now using Firefox. Is there a program for general writing, essays, assignments etc?

Firefox is a web browser, not a word processor. I'd suggest trying out something like libreoffice for an open source office suite. http://www.libreoffice.org/
