That describes the problem. All I can do is click on it and then I get a new google page with a quick search bar in the middle of the page and then I can type into it.

This is new, happened about an hour ago.

I tried deleting firefox and downloading again. Didn't fix.

Don't have this problem with safari.

In this thread, it sounds as though the problem with the search box might have been a custom theme: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/935759. Does that sound relevant to your setup?

Many toolbar settings are stored in a file that sometimes becomes corrupted. You could try renaming or deleting that file to see whether your toolbar starts behaving correctly.

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using

Help > Troubleshooting Information > Show Folder

Switch back to Firefox and Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename localstore.rdf to something like localstore.old

Restart Firefox. Any improvement?

Did as you said. Thanks for your effort but... no improvement. Any ideas?

That is it!

Not a big problem I just have to drop the ritual of 'erasing' the grayed out word google before I start typing.

Actually the same thing happened here. I couldn't 'erase' the phrase 'Enter your reply here.'

It will take some getting used to. I guess it's more 'efficient' but until it's universal, it will be a little annoying that I have to watch for the old way, too.

Thanks so much for your help.

If you find it annoying enough to spend a few minutes creating a custom style rule, that solution is in this thread:

https://support.mozilla.org/questions/935617#answer-363700

This really is annoying because it is still possible to click, highlight and type if anything was previously typed into the search box, so if actual text already exists rather than a placeholder it is NECESSARY to highlight then type or you get a jumble of old and new.

So I will try to create that custom rule.

I will let you know what happens.

Thanks again.

I've never installed or customized an add-on before, so this is as far as I've gotten: (1) and (2) done, but I have no idea where to find the 'editor'... is it in my firefox preferences, general, Manage Add-Ons?

When I press that I get way too much information.

Thanks.

Hi naomipaz, I meant the middle area of the little window that pops up to compose the rule. Paste next to the #1 (line number).
