So you're saying it will work like my present, older firefox and allow several tab windows with the same site. I won't keep getting prompts?

When you enter a site in the URL/Location/Address bar and see "Switch to tab" in the drop-down, you can

• use ALT+Enter to open the new (duplicate) tab anyway
• use CTRL (CMD in OSX) +left-click on the original tab and drag it until you see an up arrow from below the break point between two tabs, then release the left-click key, then release the CTRL/CMD key to get a duplicate of the tab with all of its history (Back/Forward)
• press the Shift key while an entry in the drop down list is highlighted to disable "Switch to Tab" and see the URL.
• Use the cursor Right key to select an item marked as Switch to Tab in the drop down list and copy the URL to the location bar.
• Open the URL in the current tab by using Shift + Enter on the highlighted entry.
• Alt + Enter opens the highlighted URL in a new tab.
• Shift + Enter opens the highlighted URL in the current tab.
• Cursor Right copies the highlighted URL to the location bar in case you want to edit it.

You can install this Add-on to completely disable "switch to tab": https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/switch-to-tab-no-more/

• Shift + Enter opens the highlighted URL in the current tab.

Thanks Cor-el I'm printing yours as well. Does anyone have any idea why in the heck Firefox thinks this is better? I like that old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Because it probably isn't a fix at all.

Extensions have a tendency to stop working at any time or after some Firefox updates or may conflict with other extensions or themes. If there is a simple solution without an extension (press Shift or Alt), then that should give preference IMO.

Based on that, maybe we all should stop recommending installation of extensions!

That was 8 month ago when that feature was not well known and understood, so lets keep it with this. Everyone can decide for themselves what they prefer. I prefer to depend on extensions as less as possible, also because I use a lot of Firefox versions that each have their own profile.

I too have multiple versions, each with multiple profiles. I keep extensions to a minimum on each.

As for the two replies by you cited above (as well as any similar ones of which you are aware), perhaps you should consider changing them to reflect your current position (by adding an "Edit" below your original reply) so that it does not appear to users viewing those posts that you are recommending that Add-on as the only solution.

I have already made a suggestion that a "checkable" item be added to the Options > Tabs panel to allow a user to easily turn switch-to-tab on or off.

As for the OP, becoming accustomed to the new look/layout of Firefox and the many changes between Firefox 3.6 and Firefox 9, as I said in my post "The easiest, one-time solution is to install the Add-on...".

Add-ons is the name that spans extensions, themes, plugins and other possible customization files (language packs).
You can see them all as separate tabs on the Tools > Add-ons > Extensions page.
