I have Firefox version 3.6.25 installed, but every day I get a message to update to this same version. The last time I updated to this version, I also get a message that it was outdated and wanted me to update to ver 8.

The latest version of Firefox is 9.0.1 - all users are recommended to update to that version.
That said, 3.6.25 is the latest version of the 3.6 edition. Can you attach a screenshot of the message you are getting?
