I am unable to update Firefox, and "automatically check for updates" is grayed out on my Mac OS X v10.5.8 where I still have Firefox 3.0.1.

I find in the update history that I have not had an update since a failed attempt in 2009.

Today I am having trouble downloading a dmg file and discovered this problem with Firefox. I don't know if my old version of Firefox is the cause but want to get updated anyway.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop

  • Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
  • Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.
