AVG Safe Search 10.0.0.1390 is my security system. Why should I let you disable it?

I saw some complaints about AVG Seafe Search not working with Firefox 6.0 but some of the users were able to resolve the issue by updating AVG. Like this user:

Seems like it was luck for him that it worked..

mha007 -- The link you posted didn't indicate the users have solved the issue.

the-edmeister simply suggested to update AVG like you suggested, but it does not work . AVG is the one actually said that AVG Safe Search is not compatible with FF 6 yet and is still working on it.

PS: I have updated my AVG to 10.0.1392 which is the latest version. FF6 extension still shows the old one: 10.0.1390.

Seems you are correct about AVG Free. The last mention of Firefox in the release notes is about Firefox 5 in AVG 2011 Free 10.0.1388 released 06/23/2011: http://forums.avg.com/us-en/avg-free-forum?sec=thread&act=show&id=110701

"PS: I have updated my AVG to 10.0.1392 which is the latest version. FF6 extension still shows the old one: 10.0.1390."

  1. Did you update AVG with Firefox open?
  2. Have you restarted Firefox since the AVG update?

safebrowser  : I am in the same situation as silkphoenix. Yes, my AVG version is 10.0.1392 now and yes, FF6 extension is 10.0.1390. I updated AVG with Firefox closed. Then , I restarted Firefox and that is the result. I did it some minutes ago. I think AVG is causing a lot of trouble in this case.

Thanks to everybody.

"Seems like it was luck for him that it worked.. " Nobody says there that it has solved the problem . Why do you say that?

I am by no means defending AVG or anyone else. I do NOT use AVG. I have spent a great deal of time searching for answers on AVG and other "specialized" issues that users are experiencing following the update to Firefox 6, such a compatibility with 3rd party company plugins and add-ons that are not being kept current by the 3rd party companies; it is their responsibility to release the updates in order to keep their customers (paid or free) happy.

The issue is probably PAID software vs. FREE software. On which do you think any company will work and update first? Economic considerations within the 3rd party companies dictate that decision.

Everyone needs to keep updated on the status (development and otherwise) of their CRITICAL software by

  • visiting the developer's site to search for new information
  • subscribing to e-mail bulletins and update news from the developer (NOT all sites/developers offer this e-mail service)
  • scanning/searching the developer's forum
  • posting questions about compatibility on the developer's site and/or forum
  • complain, complain, complain directly to the company when they do not keep their product(s) current------write a letter; the address for most developers is on their main page somewhere if you just look for "Contact Us" or something similar

I do the above on my CRITICAL software, including my security application, rather than depend on someone else to do it for me.

I have become too involved and frustrated in my attempts to assist users with their "specialized" requests concerning compatibility of their security application(s), etc.:

  • it is too time consuming to do that work when the users can do the same for themselves
  • I will return to assisting users only with questions regarding Firefox and Firefox configuration.

SafeBrowser -- "The issue is probably PAID software vs. FREE software. "

You might be right in another case, but in this case, you are not. I have PAID AVG version and to keep AVG updated or not WILL NOT solve this issue. I am going to emphasize again here that AVG Tech Help told me themselves that AVG Safe Search is NOT compatible with FF 6, only AVG Toolbar is. And they ARE working on it right now.

So let's not keep on debating and wait until AVG has the next update come up, which should fix this issue (according to them), for BOTH free and paid versions.

I have McAfee site advisor which is incompatible with current FF. It's actually not really an issue & poses no security threat as all it does is basically check the website you are going to if it's legit or not, which personally I already know if it or isn't before I visit the site.

If what you say is the case, then you need to inform your contacts at AVG that the information on the following is incorrect and needs to be changed or revised to clarify which of their many products/add-ons are compatible until the updates are released:

This is my last post in this thread. Fed up with the AVG issue. Unsubscribing from this thread now.

Again, I am going to refer all AVG users who have problem with Safe Search to this link:

http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-free-forum?sec=thread&act=show&id=170885#post_170885

If you want updates on the AVG Safe Search, it's best to go there instead of this forum, which should be mainly for FF issues.

SafeBrowser, I agree and this will be my last post in this thread as well. It's been going on far too long.

SafeBrowser, you said this:

"I have become too involved and frustrated in my attempts to assist users with their "specialized" requests concerning compatibility of their security application(s), etc.:

◦it is too time consuming to do that work when the users can do the same for themselves."

Thank you very much for your replies. I really appreciate your effort.

I think you are angry and I am really sorry. I am trying to solve my problem in the AVG forum . I thought this was a Firefox problem because it happens the same with McAffe and Norton antivirus.

I apologize for any trouble I have caused.
