I cannot set Firefox as my default browser by any of the methods described here.

I am unable to set Firefox as my default browser. If I go to Safari preferences and do so, Safari reverts to itself when it is next opened. If I set IE as defualt from Safari, that works. I conclude that the problem lies somewhere in Firefox, since FF is telling me that it is the default browser.
