FF slow reading .css files

I've got lots of custom menus and so on in my web pages. They use hosted .css files to save space in the page. However, FF has a delay reading these files, meaning that my menus are showing momentarily unstyled. As an example, suppose my page background is white, and my page font is Times Roman 10pt. If I have a menu written in Helvetica 16pt with a maroon background in the CSS, the user sees a "flash" of the menu in Times Roman 12pt and a white background before it changes to the styled menu. This results in a most unsatisfactory user experience. In IE and Chrome, the styles in the css files are applied to the content instantly and this effect does not occur. Are there any settings I can update to improve this?
