Choppy video playback (Flash, Silverlight, etc.) - Firefox 3.6.10 on Mac OS 10.6.4

I am experiencing choppy video playback (Flash, Silverlight, etc. - youtube, Netflix, Hulu, et al.) with Firefox 3.6.10 on Mac OS 10.6.4. It plays fine for a stretch and then freezes up for a few seconds - this happens over and over and over. There seems to be spikes in CPU usage associated with the freeze(s).

Safari 5.0.2 on the same machine seems to have no issues playing back the same videos.
