I need to have two sites open at the same time - and have done so in the past with Firefox. Now I can't. What am I doing wrong?

There is no built-in feature to allow displaying two tabs at the same time, you may have had an add-on that allowed you to do this, such as Fox Splitter (formerly Split Browser).
