filter applied incorrectly

danbecker75

I have a large number of filters, and an important email was processed to move message into a folder. but the filter had no rule that would apply to the message. all the filter criteria were based on the sender, but that email did not have that sender. the filter log shows the filter being applied anyway. I suspect the filter database is corrupted. How can I fix that? i noticed my version is slightly out of date, and I will update it, but I dont expect that would fix a corrupted filter database .

YOu might want to update to the latest version before asking if something is broken.

Historically, and that is the best guess I have not had V128 for years, filter did not have reports if moving incorrect messages however nothing beyond generalities are available without the exact filter criteria and the source of the mail message.

I have observed over years that the address displayed in the user interface is not the address in the TO: or CC: field of many mails where incorrect filtering on address is alleged. Thunderbird displayed a sanitized "pretty" name in the user interface that is taken from the address book for an email address. That has nothing at all to do with the actual email address in the email other than you have an address book entry for it.

I have a similar issue. Since Friday every email I have received from my Virgin Media email account has been filtered incorrectly. All the emails are received into the Inbox then this filter rule is being misapplied sending it to the wrong folder and it is always the same filter rule. Running all filters on the Inbox triggers the same problem. None of the emails match the filter rule. I have even moved the filter down the priorities with it still triggering. The filter rule in question is trying to match the senders email address which is not a match to any of the emails it has triggered on.

I have the latest version of Thunderbird version 155.0 (64-bit).

Turns out the rule had somehow created a blank test line at the end which was matching as true when it ran.

I have a large number of filters, and never noticed any problems until 9/8/26 around 3:00 am. I wasn't seeing any new random (no specific filters matched) emails in my inbox. Not any new emails in my inbox for a full day. I noticed a few new messages were filtered to the correct folders though. I turned on the filter log to see what was happening. One of my filters that has been in place for ages was starting to pick up all incoming mail that was not previously filtered and moving it all to that designated folder. I checked the filter, and it had a blank test line at the bottom. I deleted the blank line and ran my filters on that folder to get those emails to the right location. Then I ran my filters on my inbox again to make sure all filters were correctly applied. But then my ENTIRE inbox moved to yet another folder. Log showed what filter was applied, and that filter also had a blank test line which caused everything moved to that designated folder. These are filters that have not been edited in months if not years.

Did Thunderbird previously ignore blank lines and just start acting on them now? I need to move all the emails back to my inbox and run all the filters again, but I am concerned I will run into another filter with a blank line. It would be a pain to go through each filter individually...

It may have been because of a bug, which is now fixed. See if updating TB helps: TB menu > Help > About Thunderbird.

The Bug report mentioned is https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2068847

The development team are still seeking feedback if the patch in 155.0.1 actually fixes the issue. Apparently it may not be 100% effective so please try the new version and provide feedback in the bug report.

Blank lines were not ignored. The change caused by the bug report is that entire filter can evaluate to true.
