Mac - Having issues with Firefox tabs after taking a screenshot

dessertdish replied

[Using Sonoma 14.6.1]

I have been having an issue with Firefox acting up after taking a screenshot - it's not EVERY time, but I need to use screenshots enough that it's a noticeable issue.

After the screenshot is saved, suddenly clicking on tabs "selects" them with no way to "deselect" them. This prevents me from switching to a new tab and sometimes even stops me from typing in the search bar. I have found no fix for this other than force quitting or restarting my computer completely.

Any help or direction would be appreciated :)

Hello,

If the screenshot was taken using FIrefox, try these steps :

  1. Deselect Tabs: Click on a tab while holding Ctrl (Windows/Linux) or Cmd (Mac) to toggle selection off. Alternatively, right-click any tab and choose "Select All Tabs" then "Deselect All Tabs".
  2. Fix Tab Focusing: Press Ctrl + Tab or Ctrl + Shift + Tab to force Firefox to switch focus and deselect the highlighted tabs.
  3. Disable Feature: Type about:config in the address bar, search for browser.tabs.multiselect, and set it to false.
  4. Reset UI: If the UI is stuck, toggle the "Menu Bar" (Alt key) or use F11 twice to toggle full-screen mode to refresh the browser interface without restarting.
  5. Check Extensions: Run Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode (Help > Troubleshoot Mode) to see if a theme or extension is causing the stuck state.

If the problem is in the Mac OS screenshot feature, try this :

  1. Press Esc: After taking the screenshot, press Esc to instantly hide the thumbnail and prevent it from stealing focus.
  2. Switch Applications: Use Cmd + Tab to switch to a different app (like Finder) and then back to your browser to break the "stuck" tab selection.
  3. Tear Off Tab: Tear the affected tab out into a separate window, then re-attach it.
  4. Disable Thumbnail: Open the screenshot tool (Cmd+Shift+5), click "Options," and uncheck "Show Floating Thumbnail" to prevent this issue permanently.
  5. Update macOS: Ensure your Mac is updated to the latest version, as Apple often patches UI focus issues in software updates.
  6. Restart Finder: If this happens in folders, press Option + Right Click on the Finder icon in the Dock and select "Relaunch".

Hope it helps!
