What happened to the box (on the left/center of the screen )that had all the icons of plugins you can drag and drop to your toolbar (like the printer icon)? Can someone tell me how to get it back? There used to be a way to get to it by tapping on the 3 bars in the upper right of the screen and going down the options.

One more thing. Some times, when I am typing, a "toolbar" shows up at the bottom of the screen. Why is that?

Available buttons sounds like the Customize panel (Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars)? But if you mean buttons for extensions, specifically, they are now located on the Extensions button (puzzle piece) drop-down, so the first step is to open that list and pin the buttons to the toolbar, then you can use Customize to slide them around on the toolbar to your preferred location. See: Manage your extensions using the extensions button in the toolbar.

Regarding a toolbar at the bottom of the screen, is it the "Quick Find" bar? If the cursor is not in a form field and you type a letter, Firefox may open Quick Find with that letter to search in the page. You can turn that off on the Settings page. Either:

  • menu button > Settings
  • (menu bar or Alt+T) Tools > Settings

In the tiny search box, in the page, slowly type typing so that Firefox brings the relevant setting into view.

Un-check (clear) the checkbox for "Search for text when you start typing"

Did that help?

Firefox also has a shortcut for that bar, which is the / key. That is a little more involved to disable:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

More info on about:config: Configuration Editor for Firefox. The moderators would like us to remind you that changes made through this back door aren't fully supported and aren't guaranteed to continue working in the future. Since we have had this setting for a long time and I use it myself, I feel comfortable mentioning it.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste accessibility.typeaheadfind.manual and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the preference to switch the value from true to false
