Extremely long webpage loading

When loading webpages, it will often take 60-90 seconds to load the page. I've only seen this happen when loading the page for the first time, once it loads navigating through subpages is seamless. It doesn't seem to be tied to any particular domain, I've had it happen randomly on gaming websites, tech websites, even google searches. The most notable coincidence is that in the networking tab of the developer console, it always(?) takes almost exactly 30 seconds on DNS resolution, 30 seconds on Connecting, sometimes a 30s Blocking element, and then the remainder is near instantaneous; screenshot attached. My network is fine, I'm able to play low-latency games without issue, and Chrome is not exhibiting the same behaviour.

Things I've tried to resolve:

  • Restarting computer -- issue has been persisting for months
  • Created a new Firefox profile -- still showing the same behaviour
  • Disabling all addons/testing Troubleshoot Mode
  • Proxy settings in Firefox -- No Proxy and System proxy settings are both showing the behaviour
  • Disabling DNS over HTTPS

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, unfortunately we may never know the root cause -- I did a full reinstall of Windows over the weekend, and the problem has magically resolved.

When I was using the load time addon, the overwhelming majority of the time was in the Wait for Sub Resources section of DOM processing, but as the console shows the majority of that was in the network connections.

What OS? If windows, home or pro and what security software are you running besides MS Defender? What version of Firefox? Who are you using for DNS on the computer, browser, and router? What does ping and traceroute look like for you DNS provider? see screenshot 1.1.1.1 is only 12hops from me using traceroute and ping results are low.

You also need to provide example sites that are slow for you. Here is the add-on I'm using to show load time. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/load-time/ See the load time for Lexus from Japan. see screenshot

  • OS - Windows 11 Home
  • Security - just Microsoft Defender
  • Firefox version 136.0.1, though the issue has been ongoing since at least Jan 2025, so not sure which versions I've been on since then
  • Not sure how to check DNS servers for each? The WiFi network lists two DNS servers belonging to TalkTalk (my ISP).
  • Ping and traceroute are fine, screenshots attached
  • Some example sites - again not consistent every time I load them, but happens seemingly at random. Have had it on archon.gg, cloudflare.com, and google.com (screenshot attached for the google one, cloudflare in previous screenshot)

Thanks for the addon, I'll give it a shot and see if I can get some more reliable data - I don't usually have the developer console open so good if this helps collect data. The issue seems to be specific to Firefox though, which I don't understand.

Download is here. https://www.grc.com/files/DNSBench.exe

Just for S&Gs... Is your computer DIY? If not, what make and model? What's the date and driver versions of your LAN and wifi hardware?

Thanks for the replies.

  • PC was prebuilt by PC Specialist, specs attached.
  • Have just updated the Wifi driver (23.120.0.3), still seeing the same issue.
  • Browser DNS -- DNS over HTTPS is disabled
  • Router DNS -- same as ISP, 79.79.79.79 and 79.79.79.80

One curious thing I just noticed -- activating a VPN with Hotspot Shield seems to resolve the issue pretty much instantly. A website I can reliably produce the issue with is mobalytics.gg, but it loads instantly in Chrome all the time, and Firefox when I have Hotspot Shield enabled.

What does this show in Firefox? about:networking#dns Wonder what dns is being used, it's clearly faster than your ISP. Same issue on LAN and WiFi? The site load time in screenshots. https://mobalytics.gg/

Screenshot of about:networking#dns attached.

Don't have a wired connection set up so not sure whether the issue would be present. My spouse (also on wifi, Chrome user) doesn't have the issue -- it's just me, using Firefox. Haven't seen it happen on mobile devices on the same network, either.

Using the add-on I mentioned, you have not shown the slowness like I did with Lexus Japan.

Yep, I wanted to see the DOM time. Oh well, mark it as resolved and we'll leave the light on for ya.  ;-))
