Permanently unable to access certain websites after ONE Firefox restart

more options

I'm at my wits' end. There are a few websites that just don't open for some reason. Either they don't load at all and I get a blank page or there's a problem with the way they load. I've done some troubleshooting. Figured it might be an add-on, safe mode didn't fix it. Tried a 'refresh'. Didn't fix it. Figured it might be corrupt cache after the first visit, but deleting cache didn't fix it.

Finally tried reinstalling Firefox and it did... but not for long. After the reinstall, the websites were accessible again no problem. But then the next time I closed Firefox and restarted it or shut down my computer, the problem was back. This is 100% consistent. No exceptions. Always reproduces the issue.

To give examples of websites that for some reason stop working: A couple of websites for a game I play (trackmania.exchange and trackmania.io) My work Outlook inbox and more generally the whole Office 365 suite online. The Twitter feed. For some reason the UI loads but the feed just says "Something went wrong. Try reloading". I'm sure there are others I haven't found yet, but for some reason I have no problem accessing YouTube, Google, Facebook, Instagram, etc.

I have no clue how to troubleshoot this any further. Something goes wrong after closing Firefox after reinstalling it. I can't keep reinstalling it every time I turn my computer on. I also don't want to have to use hibernate constantly to keep the first instance open.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Could you try disabling Enhanced Tracking Protection on problem sites. At the left end of the address bar, click the shield icon then click the slider switch to turn off ETP on that site. Any difference?

Also, just in case Firefox is picking up some strange proxy settings:

Open the Settings page using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Settings (previously "Options")
  • type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter to load it

In the very tiny search box at the top of the page, type proxy and Firefox should filter to the "Network Settings" section.

Click the Settings button, select "No Proxy" near the top of the dialog, and click OK near the bottom of the dialog.

Any difference?

Hi jscher2000. Thanks for your reply.

I had tried ETP off as part of my troubleshooting. Sorry didn't mention it. I've tried so many things it's hard to keep track. I tried it again just now the way you said and it didn't fix the issue.

No proxy didn't fix the issue either. Affected websites behave the same.

Any other ideas? I feel the key to figuring this out is understanding why it only happens after the restart. First launch after reinstall everything's fine.

Thanks for your continued help!

There probably are some system-related parameters that start off in a more basic configuration and then, on first run, Firefox figures out whether it can upgrade them. But I don't have a good idea of what those things are.

Occasionally, Firefox is incompatible with security software, such as anti-exploit software, which attempts to inject into all the child processes created by the browser, while Firefox tries to block that. This can cause a deadlock where content processes can't start properly. However, since you are able to use some mainstream sites, I don't think it's that problem.
