Three possibilities come to mind:

(1) Google may be set to open all results in a new window, which Firefox normally diverts to a new tab instead. Please check the Google Preferences here:

https://www.google.com/preferences ("Where Results Open" section)

(2) If you have installed an add-on to manage how links open, such as "Open Link with New Tab", it could be forcing the links into a new tab. Please check its settings or remove it.

(3) If you have installed any Container-related add-ons, results may be prevented from opening in the same tab as Google. Please check your add-on settings to see how Google pages are set up there.
