I have Brisbane Times (BT) as my home page on Firefox (which is my main browser). Since I installed the latest version of FF, I have to login manually (not automatically) to BT and having done so when I close an article it logs me out of BT. Firefox asks of if I want to make FF my home browser. I see that BT is one of my saved logins but this logging out etc is something that did not happen with the older version of FF. So please how do I permanently make FF my home browser and how do I get it to remember my login on BT when I flick between articles?

Detail like websites remembering you and log you in automatically is stored in a cookie, so make sure you aren't clearing important cookies.

You can use these steps to make a website recognize and remember you.

  • create a cookie allow exception with the proper protocol (https:// or http://) to make a website remember you

You can check that you aren't clearing important cookies.

  • using "Delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" keeps cookies with an allow exception
  • using "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear cookies clears all cookies including cookies with an allow exception you may want to keep
  • clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exceptions for passwords and other website specific data
  • Settings -> Privacy & Security
Cookies and Site Data: "Manage Exceptions"

I have tried to do all that was suggested. I presume I have not done things properly or have not got to where I need to be. Could you do a step by step process in detail.

Thanks

Your ‘logged-in’ status is stored in special cookies. If the cookie is removed, you are logged out.

You may be in Private Browsing mode or told Firefox not to remember.

Type about:preferences#privacy<enter> in the address bar. The button next to History, select Use Custom Settings.

Turn off Always Use Private Browsing Mode Turn on Remember My Browsing And Download History At the bottom of the page, turn on Clear History When Firefox Closes. At the far right, press the Settings button. Turn on ONLY Cache and Form And Search History leaving the others off.

Macs: Make sure you install Firefox properly and that you do not run Firefox from within the DMG (Disk Images) file. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Hi Jim, could you test whether the cookie can be shared between (A) tabs in the same window and/or (B) new windows? Here's how:

First, log in as usual. Then before closing that tab:

(1) Open a new tab in the same window (Ctrl+T) and load another page from the site in that tab. Does the site recognize you as logged in at that point?

(2) Open a new window (Ctrl+N). Does the site recognize you as logged in when you load your home page or another page from the site in the new window?

Hi. Sorry about the delay. Been away. Neither CtrlT nor CtrlN logs me in.

Use these links to create a new profile. Use this new profile as is. Is the problem still there?

Type about:profiles<enter> in the address bar.

Just under the header, press the button; Create a New Profile. In the new window, read the text, then press Next.

In the next window, choose and enter the name of the new profile. When you are done, press Finish on the bottom.

Do not change any settings or install any add-ons. Use this new profile as is. Is the problem still there?

Fred.

Yes that seemed to fix the problem in maintaining login. I have of course lost all other data and cannot even make the current page my home page

Fred Sorted out the home page problem but is there any way to get all favourites etc from one profile to the other.

Fred

I forgot to say thanks too. These things are something one does at the start and build on them as you go along.

The fact one does not do it all the time means one is stuffed when something goes wrong. But thanks again anyway and if you know osf a way to get all favourites over that would be good too.

The data should be in an old profile. How many profiles are shown on the about:profiles page ?

H i Fred. There are three.

Have played with loading the second one on the list and it was the old one with the troubles. (Then I had to go out!). I have not tried the first yet as I have just got home. Should it fix the prob?

Cheers

If you can find the data and copy it to the current profile, you should be all set.

You can copy certain files with Firefox closed to the current profile folder to transfer or recover personal data. Be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

  • bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
  • favicons: favicons.sqlite
  • bookmark backups: compressed .jsonlz4 JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
  • cookies.sqlite for the Cookies
  • formhistory.sqlite for saved autocomplete Form Data
  • logins.json (encrypted logins;32+) and key4.db (decryption key;58+) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
key3.db support ended in 73+; to use key3.db in 58-72, make sure to remove key4.db
  • cert9.db (58+) for (intermediate) certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
  • persdict.dat for words added to the spell checker dictionary
  • permissions.sqlite for Permissions and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for other website specific data (Site Preferences)
  • sessionstore.jsonlz4 for open tabs and pinned tabs (see also the sessionstore-backups folder)

Sorry about the delay as I have been away for some time. There are 3 profiles listed with the first and second labelled as default and cannot be deleted. How do I copy all the data bookmarks etc over to the new profile. My original one had lots of bookmarks and of course saved logins to various sites and add blockers.

Each profile has a site for I presume storing data in the root directory and the local directory and both profiles 1 and 2 say they cannot be deleted as they are in use. I thought I might be able to go back to the first profile but it does not give an option to do that. All this occurred because I did something in FF to stop tacking, which I presume has set up profile 2

So as profile 3, which you told me to do, and does not seem to have the problem I asked about in the first place, how do I copy all the bookmarks from one profile to the other. I presume you just can't copy the file from the root and local directories from profile 1 into profile 2 or 3. Add blockers etc I can reinstall.

Is the other option just somehow copy the bookmarks to wherever, Edge for example, and totally reinstall FF.

Sorry to cause so much problem but hopefully I am learning something out of all this.
