Yet Another Update That Stops Firefox Working Properly!

I have asked before, but it appears that it is not possible to stop Firefox updating; whatever advice I am given just turns out to be legacy which is no longer applicable or the work of fantasists that does nothing at all. So now I am on 98.0.2 whether I wanted to or not. And I do not! So can someone tell me why I have to go through complicated procedures in order to get the bookmarks working as before. I am also no longer able to use the Logitech Media Server advanced settings as the default address no longer opens in Firefox. This is why I don't want to update EVER. Every time Firefox updates it changes things just for the sake of changing and takes ages to put everything back to a working state. And for why? Just to appease those that believe their ability to program gives them some god like ability which we should be praising without question. All the time the updates are claimed to be for security reasons. I can see no reason why changing the appearance of bookmarks and making them display as several double spaced columns relates in any way to making the software more secure. Perhaps one of these gods would inform us mere mortals what the purpose of deliberately pissing off users serves? Also, I can see no reason why Logitech Media Server would now be considered as a security risk when I have been using it for more than a decade. Once again I am forced to use Edge until such time that Firefox release another version to put right yet another software screw up. Why is no one apparently in charge of the software release, why have they not heard of beta testing and why can't they issue a repair to rectify their own incompetence?

If you had a definitive working method then why not share it?

There is a method for businesses that manage software updates themselves to completely prevent Firefox from checking for updates using enterprise policies. For security reasons, is not appropriate for unmanaged systems.

Do you really believe, given that every update requires some manipulation or rectification by the user at a cost of many user hours, that a reputable business would adopt this software?

There is something peculiar about your system/configuration which makes updates an ordeal for you. Normally Firefox updates are no more disruptive than other application software updates.

Hi Les, you have a lot of previous threads which probably answer your question about updates if you re-read them carefully: https://support.mozilla.org/user/etruscanhouse/questions

So can someone tell me why I have to go through complicated procedures in order to get the bookmarks working as before. ... I can see no reason why changing the appearance of bookmarks and making them display as several double spaced columns relates in any way to making the software more secure.

Is this about the change in Firefox 89+ that added more space between menu items? This was a intentional design change, but I don't know why it was made.

Starting in Firefox 91, there is no built-in way to reverse the change. You can use the community-supported (unofficial) workaround of using custom style rules in a userChrome.css file.

There is work under way to link menu spacing to the optional Compact density mode in a future release. I don't know whether that will be Firefox 92 or Firefox 93.

I am also no longer able to use the Logitech Media Server advanced settings as the default address no longer opens in Firefox. ... I can see no reason why Logitech Media Server would now be considered as a security risk when I have been using it for more than a decade.

What kind of message are you getting when you try to access the server -- is it something you can copy/paste into a reply here? Is the problem covered in this article: How to troubleshoot security error codes on secure websites?

Did you not wonder why I am again stating, for the record, that I cannot prevent Firefox from updating? What part of NONE OF THEM WORK do you not understand? I repeat: NONE of any of the suggestions tried have worked. Do you really think I have nothing better to do than to waste my time undertaking many many different recommendations to prevent Firefox from updating, then complain when I have the same problems by manually updating it? You yourself state the obvious: 'probably answer'. If you had a definitive working method then why not share it? The fact is you don't! You must be one of the fantasists that believe by repeating the same rubbish generated by others that equally don't know what they are doing is the way to progress! Do you really believe, given that every update requires some manipulation or rectification by the user at a cost of many user hours, that a reputable business would adopt this software?

So, you appear to agree then that the previous instructions do not work. The reason being that you only provide proven instructions for businesses and not individuals, as apparently there are security reasons at play which don't affect business users. Even though the user is able to turn off security in the options. Apparently, you knew full well that the procedures previously provided would not work and knowing this you have wasted my time by giving me lots of suggestions that, by your own admission are worthless to me. As an adult, and as a single man business, I think that I am capable of making up my own mind whether or not I accept the risk involved. There can only be three possible reasons why you are denying me the means to do what I ask: 1. Your attitude of knowing something you are not willing to share. 2. Your attitude to waste users time with ineffective means you know won't work. 3. Your attitude that you know better than me despite my being an adult and capable of making up my own mind. Does everyone in support share your attitude to customer service or is it just you?

So, given there is a means, until such time as Firefox get the updates working properly, can anyone provide me the working details for how a business can stop updates?

Hi Les, I do not and cannot speak for any other support volunteers. This thread is not exclusive to me, so anyone who wants to take their time to assist you can reply.

Great, so let's hope they don't share your personal opinion that not providing a working solution for preventing updates is the reasonable attitude to take!
