Making text in FireFox 52 look like text in FireFox 22 under Windows XP

This question is a follow-up to support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1243718. When I turned off anti-aliasing, text became much more readable, but still not as good as it was in FireFox 22 (see attached picture for comparison). Any ideas? (I would be more than happy to continue using FireFox 22, but there are a lot of Web sites that require encryption algorithms that FireFox 22 doesn't have, so I am compelled to use FireFox 52 with all its problems, tabs that take up valuable screen space and are impossible to turn off, and unreadable ClearType text with smudged letters that make me nauseous. I think whoever coined the term "CLEARType" was a very sick person).

You've changed wrong preference, you need to change those two:

  • gfx.canvas.azure.backends
  • gfx.content.azure.backends

I appreciate your response, but could you provide more details? The "azure" settings are currently set to "direct2d1.1,skia,cairo"--I don't have the slightest idea what that is, and what exactly should I set them to? Also, if I changed the wrong preference, I should revert it to the original, but that will enable ClearType, which will take me even further away from my goal of making text as good as it was in FireFox 22. Could you enumerate, in as much detail as possible, the exact settings that will make FireFox 52 text look like FireFox 22?

Who would remember that, it was 6 years ago, but try "direct2d1.1,cairo,skia" or only "cairo" and restart the browser.

I think that would be prefering cairo over skia:

  • gfx.canvas.azure.backends = direct2d1.1,cairo,skia
  • gfx.content.azure.backends = direct2d1.1,cairo,skia

I am getting a little confused here. I currently have anti-aliasing disabled, should I re-enable it or not? When it's disabled, ClearType is off, so ClearType Rendering Mode setting has no effect, correct? And if I were to play with ClearType Rendering Mode settings, where could I get a description of those modes--and also a description of "direct2d1.1", "cairo", "skia"? What are they? Another question is, if somebody suggests that I change ClearType settings, does that imply that there exists a setting in ClearType that causes it NOT to smudge letters?
