I’m running a windows 8.1 computer with several open tabs in my browser. This computer crashed and I can’t get back into windows to sync up (I’ve tried booting from various sources, automatic repair, etc. it just won’t boot up). I hope that I’ll be able to extract my important files from my hard drive. I’m setting up a new windows 10 computer. My question is, can I copy over a file from my old computer to my new computer that Firefox will recognize and open up the tabs that I was last working on from my old computer? I have not synced, but the last time that I was able to use my old computer I did close Firefox cleanly, and I was able to log off from windows with no serious issues. Hopefully there is a file that I can copy over which will simply allow me to continue working on my open tabs. Thanks in advance.

The Firefox profile folder usually has a random name, so best is to use the button on the about:support page to go to the current profile folder and copy sessionstore.jsonlz4 to this folder.

You need sessionstore.jsonlz4 in the profile folder to transfer open tabs.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

You can copy certain files with Firefox closed to the current profile folder to transfer or recover personal data. Note that best is to avoid copying a full profile folder. Note that you should be cautious with copying SQLite database files if you previously had problems.

  • bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
  • favicons: favicons.sqlite
  • bookmark backups: compressed .jsonlz4 JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
  • cookies.sqlite for the Cookies
  • formhistory.sqlite for saved autocomplete Form Data
  • logins.json (encrypted logins;32+) and key4.db (decryption key;58+) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
key3.db support ended in 73+; to use key3.db in 58-72, make sure to remove key4.db
  • cert9.db (58+) for (intermediate) certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
  • persdict.dat for words added to the spell checker dictionary
  • permissions.sqlite for Permissions and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for other website specific data (Site Preferences)
  • sessionstore.jsonlz4 for open tabs and pinned tabs (see also the sessionstore-backups folder)

Thanks for replying. So when I find “ sessionstore.jsonlz4” on my old hard drive, do I just move it to the same location on my new computer and when I open Firefox it will recognize it and open with my tabs? Or is there another procedure for Firefox on my new computer to recognize the file and open my tabs from my old computer? You mentioned that I shouldn’t use all of the old history files from my old computer. I’m really just worried about the open tabs from my old computer and that’s all that I need to carry over.

Cor-el: Thank you very much for your help. I've been a little crazy so I didn't have a chance to attempt your solution until recently, but when I did it worked. I appreciate it.
