I am being prompted to install a firefox flashplayer update. it is from "joinappstreams.best". Is this safe? When I google "joinappstreams.best" there are no results.

It does not sound safe.

Do you think this is a particularly crappy ad from one website, or does it seem to occur on multiple sites?

One possible culprit would be an extension. You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. On the right side, find the "Manage Your Extensions" heading.

If there is at least one extension before the next heading -- "Recommended Extensions" -- please continue:

Then cast a critical eye over the list below that heading. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything suspicious or that you just do not remember installing or why? If in doubt, disable (or remove). For your privacy and security, don't let mystery programs linger here.

Any improvement?

Whenever you get a message / popup that software / files need to be updated;

DO NOT USE ANY OF PROVIDED LINKS

While this may be a legitimate message, it could also be
Malware or a Virus.
Anytime you want or need to check for upgrades,
go to the website of the True Owner of the program in question.
For example, to check out Firefox, go to https://www.mozilla.org

You can report such a site at; http://www.google.com/safebrowsing/report_phish/

At most you may get a notice if you are using a older vulnerable version of Flash on the page as Flash is never downloaded from random websites that is not Adobe. There are indeed fake Flash updates as Mozilla has added a lot of them on blocklist over the years. https://blocked.cdn.mozilla.net/

Flash 32.0.0.387 has been out since June 9?

https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ https://helpx.adobe.com/security/products/flash-player/apsb20-30.html

Also do you really need Flash? as Adobe is completely discontinuing all support of their Flash Player Plugins by end of 2020 and not many sites still make use of Flash and instead using HTML5 players now days.
