Firefox shows blank pages
Hey there,
i recently upgraded from a mid-2010 macbook pro to a mid-2017 one, migrating all my data from a time machine backup. everything seemed to work seamlessly, but then i figured out that firefox doesn't show some pages, for example the video-streaming platform "chili", instead only blank pages show up. i already tried safe, which doesn't help. when i try to delete all my history and empty the cashe etc. firefox crashes continuously.
i figured out two things so far: first i changed my macbook user account and tried the same website in firefox on my guest account. here it worked. then i went back to my normal admin account, i deleted my firefox profiles folder and reinstalled firefox. now it also worked here. unfortunately this would make me lose all my settings and data, which i don't want, so i put a backup of my old profiles folder back in place to keep all my stuff, but the blank pages error remains.
if anyone could help me, i'd be super grateful!
thanks so much :) Miro

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox? Look inside. Look for the folder with the latest creation date.

When you are ready, we can start moving parts of your old data and Copy it to the new profile.
First; open your file browser to the New profile;
Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.
Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.
Windows: Show Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder
Linux: Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Directory. To its right press the button Open Directory.
Second, open another file browser to the Old Firefox folder on your desktop. Then open the folder with the latest date, or whatever one you want to use.
Warning ! ! Only Copy the files you are told. We will avoid anything that might cause problems. Here is the list of files;
cookies: cookies.sqlite Do not bother. Cookies will be created when you return to the website. However, you will have to log in everywhere. And you may lose any settings that websites store on your computer.
extensions(add-ons, themes): it would be better to download them fresh. If you need to remember what add-ons you had, open the extensions sub-folder and look at the .xpi files
logins.json and key3.db [v58+]key4.db : These are the password files. Copy Both !
persdict.dat : custom dictionary - words you added to the dictionary
mimeTypes.rdf [v55+]handlers.json : What to do with what type of file.
places.sqlite : History and Bookmarks.
prefs.js : Your settings. Note: If you were having problems, this could be contaminated.
cert8.db [v58+]cert9.db and possibly cert_override.txt : Stores all your security certificate settings and any SSL certificates you have imported into Firefox. If removed, the cert8.db, cert9.db file will be replaced.
search.json.mozlz4 : file stores the user-installed search engines that are available in the Firefox v47+
search.sqlite file and searchplugins folder store the search engines that are available in the Firefox Search bar before Firefox v47
Copy these files from the old to the new. You may get a message that the files already exist. Choose to over-write for each file.
Hey Fred, thank you so far. Unfortunately I do not see such a folder called "old Firefox" on my desktop. How should this have been created?

i deleted my firefox profiles folder and reinstalled firefox . . . so i put a backup of my old profiles folder back in place to keep all my stuff
Sorry, I thought you had refreshed the browser. That would have placed the old profile in Old Firefox.
Use these links to create a new profile. Use this new profile as is. Is the problem still there?

Type about:profiles<enter> in the address bar.
The problem is, that I don't remember the password of my Firefox-Account which is why I don't necessarily want to sign out, but as I temporarily deleted my profile folder and reinstalled Firefox, it worked without blank pages, so the problem indeed seems to lie somewhere in my profile folder.
Just to follow you correctly, what you would recommend me to do is ultimately create a new profile and then I could import part of my old one, like add-ons and bookmarks?
Follow the instructions here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1289148#answer-1317810
Hey Fred,
thanks again! I followed your instructions, however, when I tried to open Firefox afterwards an error message popped up stating "The bookmarks and history system will not be functional".
Anyway: I tried another thing, which was to copy all files from my old profile EXCEPT for cookies and preferences. The blank page issue remained, which means it can not stem from there. I'm puzzled.

You didn't follow the instructions.
Why, what did I do wrong? I did exactly copy all the files you told me to in the second post. :-/
Oops, sorry. I misread the message.
If you have sync, and there is a problem anywhere, Shut Down Sync Immediately On All Devices to prevent the problem from spreading. Once the problem is fixed, perform the same repair on all computers/profiles before using sync again.

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.
You will find Places Database near the bottom. Press the Verify Integrity button.
