firefox won't start after update unless I delete doh-rollout@mozilla.org.xpi, why
for the last 2-3 updates everytime I go to start firefox I get a busy cursor and firefox won't open. When I check task manager firefox process is listed but I can not end it. Als a consent ui process appears for a split second, then vanishes, then reappears and vanishes in an infininte cycle untill I log out of windows to force it to close.
I browsed to mozilla install location and deleted the only .xpi I didn't recognise a doh-rollout@mozilla.org.xpi and thankfully I can launch firefox again. As this problem seems to come back every update I'm hoping someone has an explaination and fix.

Most of those are Microsoft C++ redistributable components, a certificate database, and accessibility settings and UI. (And the dns-over-https extension.)
You may want to try downloading the full installer for Firefox, then uninstall your current installation, then re-install from the downloaded installer. This may fix something not properly registered with Windows.

That particular file is being used for the DNS-over-HTTPS feature (hence the "doh" name). To the best of my knowledge, this is still a somewhat experimental feature that is slowly being rolled out to users.
You should be able to disable DNS-over-HTTPS in the Firefox network settings or you may be able to opt-out of the experimental rollout.

My problem is it is already disabled in Network Setting and it seems you can only opt out once firefox has started up and presented the popup for you to choose.
When my firefox updates I can't start firefox up because it gets stuck in a consent ui loop while nothing at all is displayed, no homepage, no firefox just my desktop.
about:config doesn't have network.trr entry for me to change and about studies is empty. Is there a way to safely add this value and bypass the popup that seems to be causing the issue?
You may want to try opening Firefox in Safe Mode to see if that allows you to interact with it and then complete the opt-out process.
As I've already deleted the .xpi i'll have to wait till the next update comes around to try safemode, didn't know you could start in safemode using shift.

Unfortunately I can't even open firefox in safe mode, and this time deleting the doh.xpi wasn't enough. A large amount of dll's all created at the same time also had to be deleted.
I've included a snapshot of my recycle bin showing the files I had to remove to get firefox working again.
Perhaps its my security settings causing this issue as the consent ui that tries to launch is going before firefox thus safemode or no it just wont run.
