Firefox Options says "Tree Style Tab, requires Container Tabs" yet there is no add-on called "Container Tabs" so what does this mean?

Please, no code language, HTML or or 'inside baseball' responses that include terms not self-defined to non-experts as myself...pretend this is my first time using a browser. I just need to know what action I should be taking as the add-on (Tree Style Tab) seems to be working properly.

Container Tabs is a builtin feature, so you don't actually need to install the Mutli-Account Containers tab add-on to use the feature. I linked the page above because it gives a description of what the feature is.

There are some add-ons that enable and use the Container Tabs feature . Their reason for doing so may vary.

I assume the message you are referring to is being shown in the options page for Firefox. Directly below it, you should see a greyed out Enable Container Tabs option that is checked (see the screenshot).

There isn't any action required by you to actually get the add-on to work properly. The add-on sets the feature up properly. The warning message is just included in the settings to let you know why the feature is enabled, since it's a feature that is usually disabled by default.

Hopefully this clears things up a bit.

The add-on is referring to Multi-Account Containers, often referred to simply as Container Tabs.

Thank you, but now I get the following message: "An extension, Firefox Multi-Account Containers, requires Container Tabs." So what next?

This is about permission to use the builtin Firefox container support and extend it with more features. Firefox comes with basic container support and extensions can use these containers for their own purposes. Tree Style Tabs support container tabs and that is the reason why it requires this permission because otherwise containers would be broken.

For instance there is the Facebook Container extension that also requires container support to be enabled.

There are three prefs available on the about:config page related to containers.

  • privacy.userContext.ui.enabled = true
  • privacy.userContext.enabled = true
  • privacy.userContext.longPressBehavior = 2 (longpress on new tab + after a delay)

Thank you Wesley. From what I gather the warning is completely pointless unless I take direct action to disengage Container Tabs when a given add-on requires them to be active. Mozilla has done some inexplicable things ( or at least present themselves as 'inexplicable') since launching the 'updated' Firefox; this appears to be one of them.

The warning is there simply to inform you of why that specific setting is enabled and why you are not able to disable it using the checkbox.
