Win7 64bit. Firefox completed an upgrade to version 68.2.0 and when I clicked on Show all bookmarks the whole layout looks different and most important the description field is missing. This was a problem once before with a different version of Firefox but the ESR version was supposed to keep this. I know I can open the html file which shows this info but that is not nearly as easy to use or convenient as having that info a click away. Is there anyway to revert to a version or get this field to show again? thanks

hello, the bookmarks description functionality got removed in firefox 62: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/62.0/releasenotes/#changed

now that the esr branch has changed from firefox 60 to firefox 68, this change is taking effect in firefox esr as well and there is no supported browser version that has it anymore.

you could see if an addon like https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/bookmark-notes/ gets you close to your old workflow.

No, the bookmark-notes does not show the description field, but thanks. Can I reinstall the 60 version of Firefox? If so where do I find the install file?

more options

Firefox 60 is no longer supported, please do not downgrade to it. The bookmarks description is gone and not coming back.

If you have used the profile with Firefox 68 then it is likely that places.sqlite got upgraded and that the description field has been removed, so even if you would downgrade then you still won't have access to the description field unless you have a backup of places.sqlite.

If you have an HTML or JSON backup with the description data then you might be able to extract it.

I do have backups and I have viewed the html file but its much harder to use it in that form so it would be better to install an older version. Any idea why they decided that the description field was not wanted?

This wasn't really about not wanting to have the description field, but was a consequence of rewriting all places transactions as asynchronous processes and run them in their own thread. Previously all these transactions were running on the main processor thread and thus affected the responsiveness of Firefox. Because telemetry test results showed that the description field wasn't widely used and because it was only exposed in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) it was decided not to re-implement this feature as an asynchronous process also because there was already a second description field that was used for the new tab (Firefox Home) page and that was filled via the meta tag used by websites. This second description field is not exposed at all in the user interface and thus there is no way to access or modify it.

OK thanks, interesting. What is this second description file used for if it is not accessible? I have the old install file for ESR60.9, Can I use it to at least temp install it so I can find another way to save my "description" info?

I returned to using FF 60.9.0 ESR ... for now. Maybe WaterFox is another option to try.
