How do I stop Firefox from displaying the name of a graphic I hover over? If this is on the screen when I follow a link, sometimes it persists even when I close the whole browser! The only way to get rid of it in those cases is to log off and back on or it'll sit on the desktop and overlay anything that is displayed.

The graphic attached shows the popup that I'd like to inhibit.

This bug of tooltips lingering when you change tabs or windows was tracked down and squashed (#1550637). However, the initial fix needed to be fixed, so it didn't get into 68.0.2. It will be in Firefox 69, due out September 3rd.

If you can't wait, you could consider using Firefox 69 in its pre-release form as the "beta" or "developer" edition of Firefox. You can read more about them here: https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/channel/desktop/

Please make a backup of your profiles before changing "channels": Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

Those tooltips should close automatically when you no longer hover the link.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

Close and restart Firefox after modifying the setting for changes to take effect.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

Well, I know that they "should" go away, my problem is sometimes they don't. I have the latest drivers that exist that I can find for the video. FWIW, I'm not the only one that sees this, several other folks have told me the same thing.

I'll try turning off hardware acceleration.

I find the tooltips (element titles displayed after a couple moments of hovering) can become persistent if I triggered something else to happen too quickly before Firefox cleared them. Often moving the mouse pointer around/over them resolves the problem, but it doesn't happen often enough for me to have identified a clear pattern and solution.

Sometimes weird application display problems can be cleared by using the Show Desktop command, which minimizes all application windows. On Windows 10, the very far right edge of the Taskbar will do that or you can press either of these keyboard shortcuts:

  • Windows key + D
  • Windows key + M

I believe it happens when the tip is open and a new page opens before the tip is cleared. Then there's no way to clear it without going back to the first page. If you happen to close that window before the tip is gone, it's like it's permanent! It even survives closing FF completely, and just hangs around on the desktop.

That's great, I can wait a few days (weeks) for the FF 69 release, knowing it's going to go away for good soon is enough for me. :)
