It was working fine a few days ago when I last checked it & now does not. What can I try?

You can place the mouse pointer between the location bar and the search bar in normal mode (i.e. not in customize mode) to get a resize pointer that you can drag left or right to change the relative width of both bars (the total length doesn't change). This only works if the two bar are positioned next to each other with no other elements between them.

Hello- that is the first thing I tried. I do not believe it is in customized mode. I mean, I have closed the Browser & reopened & tried again.

So, the mouse pointer doesn't change if you place the mouse pointer between the two bars?

Try to rename/remove xulstore.json and when present delete localstore.rdf in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

I don't know WHY, but I went into customize> restore defaults> Done. I then went back into customize & made changes as I believe it was originally & the search bar will lengthen & shorten as needed now.
