Can someone explain the click to play option and Flashblock

已張貼

I recently asked Microsoft a question. I said is it possible updates have slowed my computer. While the answer was sort of fuzzy, they suggested that I use click to play and use Flashblock. But, they then said Firefox has made their browser not be able to use Flashblock and Flash is going to be used, regardless with Firefox. Can someone explain what is happening if someone whats to use Flashblock? Secondly, my computer has gotten slower in the last few weeks. Is it possible a Firefox update is causing the slowness? I have a functioning security system and I defrag and clear the disk periodically for my maintenance. Thank you.

Flash Block and other such add-ons stop clips from playing until you want them to. They are very useful.

You can set the Shockwave Flash plugin to "Ask to Activate" via "Add-ons -> Plugins"

You can find a Lego block icon at the left end of the location bar indicating that the web page uses a plugin (Flash) that Firefox might block. You can click this Lego block icon to allow or block this plugin.

cor-el, FredMcD, Thank you both for your replies. I don't have the Shockwave Flash plugin installed on my computer, have very few plug-ins or add-ons installed period. So, evidently? because it is not installed, Flash has no effect on my computer slowness? To my knowledge, I have the latest version of Firefox. I certainly noticed in the last couple of months, it takes much longer to load my home page than what it used to, and I made no changes to my system to my knowledge. Thank you.

You can't be affected by a program you don't have. [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode Start Firefox in Safe Mode] {web link} A small dialog should appear. Click '''Start In Safe Mode''' (not Refresh). Is the problem still there? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-slow-how-make-it-faster https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-uses-too-many-cpu-resources-how-fix https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-uses-too-much-memory-ram https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-hangs-or-not-responding https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-takes-long-time-start-up

FredMcD, thanks for the reply. I tried Firefox in safe mode, made no difference in computer speed. Actually, made a few web sites much slower? I will show my computers hard drive memory. My C drive has 339 GB free of 449 GB. Sure seems like there is plenty of unused memory there. But, my D drive or HP recovery has only 1.75 GB free of 16.56 GB. Is there a problem there? Appreciate your comments there. Thank you.

Looks like plenty of memory. 1.75 GB Gig is 10%, so time to get another drive.

Did you check out the links I posted?

FredMcD, Thanks for your reply. Yes, I checked out the links you suggested. I do have the latest version of Firefox, and I reviewed your links to see if they could help any. While I have plenty of memory on one hand, C drive, but evidently little on another, my D drive, is that the reason my computer runs slow? Can you possibly explain, in plain English so to speak, I'm not a computer wiz, and I don't want to get in to trouble by causing more issues. By the way, I did try refreshing Firefox some time ago. Not only did it not help, it caused a whole bunch of trouble! When I explained that on this forum, I was told it is NOT a good idea to refresh Firefox. Thank you, FredMcD.

Start your Computer in safe mode with network support. Then start Firefox. Try Secure websites. Is the problem still there?

The second drive or a separate partition on the same drive looks like a partition to restore your computer to the default, so this is not a drive that should be used to store data. It could also be a special SSD device used for restoring your computer to its initial setup if required. Your Windows system drive (C) has plenty of room, so you shouldn't worry.

Hi cor-el, thank you for your reply. So, if my C drive has plenty of usable space and therefore memory, what is causing my computer slowness? I had my computer "rebuilt", that was the terminology given to me by the way, and after it was "rebuilt", I had much better performance. But, it only lasted abut 5-6 months before it got slow again. I know when I check my speedtest, it shows on average, about 50 MPS. When my system was "rebuilt" I was seeing 95 MPS, which is what I'm paying for. Just wondering if my computer is just too old? I'm not a computer genius and therefore just don't know what is really going on or how to fix it. I know when I try and do some of the, what I refer to, complicated fix procedures, no difference is made. I clean the disk, defrag, run virus checks via my security system, they find no security problems. All what seem to be regular maintenance. Any suggestions cor-el? It would seem being when my computer was "rebuilt" it ran fine, for awhile, so I'm specious my computer is bad, or just too old. Thank you.

FredMcD, I tried the safe mode networking experiment. Made difference at all, still slowness. I definitely notice it takes much longer to load my homepage or any web site after I load Firefox in my system. That malady was not there about 2 months ago. When I loaded Firefox, my homepage, MSN, or any other site, appeared much quicker than it does now for some reason. So, I sort of suspect a update, either Firefox or Windows may have caused my issue. But, frankly I seldom do a Windows update when they are available for fear a problem will occur. Thank you.

It is possible that your firewall or other security software blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox application. Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Hi cor-el, thank you for your reply. When I turn off my security system all together, temporarily, so there is no firewall for anything, and run my computer, there is no difference in my computer system speed loading web sites or navigating on them. I was hoping there might be something there, but made no difference. Any more suggestions? Thank you.
