FF has stopped being able to open pdf files. Up-to-date FF. Re-installed anyway. Won't open pdf - loops through open-open-open - try save, then open same result

Opening a pdf file via "open in containing folder", I get the option to open or save. Choose open, I get the option to open or save... and so on ad infinitum.

If I save, then open, I get the above.

Worked two days ago, has worked for years.

I've re-installed FF, even though I was already up-to-date - same scenario as above.

Firefox has ceased being able to open a pdf file.

The problem is with opening PDF files you already saved to disk? They want to open in Firefox? That may be a problem with the program association at the Windows level. Try re-associating PDFs with Adobe Reader or your preferred PDF handler. I think if you right-click > Open With, and direct Windows 7 to choose a program from the computer, you can check a box to use that going forward.

If you really do want to view PDFs in Firefox, try double-switching your PDF setting. Change it to Always Ask, close and reopen the Options page, then change it to Preview in Firefox. Any improvement? This article will get you to the relevant area on the page: View PDF files in Firefox or choose another viewer.

Also, it's risky to direct Firefox to use Firefox.exe to open any kind of download, as that can create a loop: Firefox repeatedly opens empty tabs or windows after you click on a link.

Any improvement?

Appears I don't have Adobe reader, nor have I evr had it on this PC. Changing to Preview in Firefox has resolved all isues. Thank you - I had, due to this problem, downloaded a couple of PDF readers which were awful. Looks like I've always used FF and only FF for PDfs on this PC. Thanks again.

If you don't need to print PDFs with high accuracy, or fill and save PDF forms, Firefox's built-in previewer probably covers most of your needs. If you have those additional needs, Adobe Reader is useful.

Make sure to uncheck unwanted extras when downloading!!

If there's a PDF you're viewing in the built-in viewer that you want to launch in Adobe, you can use the viewer's download button:
