Hello Please can you help? All the data stored in Firefox for my usernames and passwords has completely disappeared since the last upgrade a few days ago. I use a laptop pc running Windows 10.0. I have tried to understand from similar threads, but I'm not a very techie person and need step by step simple instructions to try and resolve the problem! Thanks so much.

What about the rest of the profile? bookmarks, settings . . . .

Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox? Look inside. Look for the folder with the latest creation date.

In the event that the passwords information is lost, you should record all information in a separate text file somewhere else on your hard drive, or written down. You can easily copy and paste if you need to do so. If you are concerned about someone else looking at that file, you can compress it using a password.

Thank you for your help!

Hello Grasseroots,

If this means that your problem is solved (which would be great  !); would you be so kind as to mark FredMcD's post as Chosen Solution  ? ("Solved the problem" button to the right)

Thank you in advance  !

Hello again Grasseroots,

You inadvertently marked my post as Chosen Solution instead of FredMcD's .....

You can rectify it bly clicking on the "Undo" button to the right and then mark FredMcD's post.

Sorry to put you through all this trouble .....

Never mind my previous post - I will now flag this thread and ask a moderator to rectify the Chosen Solution mark.

FredMcD,

Me too. Bad - very bad. I reinstalled FF because it was behaving horribly. Script errors, a nice & very temporary blue screen w/MBAM running on top of it -- What was that????? - and a sent crash report. So I didn't lose it the first time, but the second time.

Anyway, I am going through my many old backups, looking for the most recent key3 and logins.json files. I have key3 and 4, but the 4 has more data in it. Will that work okay?

When I did a search (within the Old file) I have a list of logins to choose from. I assume I just pick the latest and copy into current profile - restored today.

I have different file names, so I realize I will have to create a new profile. (Just noticed that.) I MISS FEBE!!!!!!! The best password restorer.

Thank you.

Did you try any of those Lost Password Recovery programs? I tried Nir Soft, but got an error - and came back here.

With matching logins.json and key4.db files in the profile folder you should be able to access the passwords stored in logins.json. You may have to remove pkcs11.txt and secmode.db in case of issues with the software security device that handles the passwords. If you have a logins.json.corrupt then there might be a problem with the key file (key4.db). If you have a key3.db file then you can try this file instead of key4.db (i.e. remove an existing key4.db) and rename logins.json.corrupt to logins.json. Make sure to keep a backup copy of all involved files elsewhere.

I don't think I have a key3 & logins.json from the same file - at least not the one I looked at most recently.

Sorry to say, cor-el. I have a much more pressing issue (re passwords). I can't read this now.

Unexpected loss of time to spend restoring this. It's annoying.

Will be back.

Thank you.

The password files used to be the key3 and logins.json files. Now Firefox uses the key4 and logins.json files.

FredMcD,

That clears up one thing. But again, I likely (until I search my backup drive) do not have a logins.json & key4.db under the same account name.

I would have full logins from 2016, 2017. Trying to pull the (obviously) most recent, so I have to check my 2018 & 19 stash. I backup daily. (Not sure which FF files are saved.) Any old file would do - in a pinch.

Would you mind addressing my possible contingencies?

Thank you.

Firefox can still fallback to using key3.db as the key file, the only requirements are that logins.json and the key file match and the key4.db isn't present (i.e. only logins.json and key3.db) to make Firefox use logins.json and key3.db (a new key4.db file will be created).

Firefox can also still import the passwords from the old signons.sqlite database
