Firefox stopped autofilling passwords

已張貼

About a week ago, Firefox suddenly stopped prompting for passwords and no long autofills passwords. I tried rolling back to v. 63, but it still won't work. If I go into options and check "ask to save logins and passwords," it works as long as Firefox is open. But as soon as I close Firefox, the option is no longer checked.

All my passwords as still there in Firefox, but they will no longer autofill. This literally started about a week ago and I have made NO changes to my computer. I do use Roboform, but I have used it alongside Firefox for many years with no issues. I did log out of Roboform, but Firefox passwords still did not work.

I build and repair computers for others, so do have a clue here. Any suggestions?

Hello Draclvr,

If you're sure that RoboForm Password Manager isn't the culprit; would you please make sure that you're not in permanent Private Browsing mode :

3-bar menu (or 'Tools') => Options => Privacy & Security => under 'History' => Firefox will : choose : 'Use custom settings for history' Uncheck : 'Always use private browsing mode'

You could also check the value of the preference "signon.rememberSignons" on the "about:config" page :

Type in the address bar about:config and press Enter (promise to be careful, if asked)

Then type in the search bar signon.remember and look for the above mentioned pref.

If you have to change the value, then close and restart Firefox.

Does that help  ?

Thanks for the quick reply. I checked and I am NOT in permanent Private Browsing mode. Going to signon.remember indicated a "false" value. I right clicked and changed to "true." Restarted Firefox. No change.

I went to Options; I checked the "ask to save logins and passwords" option. I opened another tab and Firefox filled in my login information for my ISP server. I closed Firefox, opened Options and once again the "ask to save logins and passwords" option was UNchecked. That appears to be what will not hold.

If you have the "Trend Micro Password Manager" installed then try to uninstall this application via the Windows Control Panel.

If you use another external Password Manager like Roboform then that manager might disable the Firefox Password Manager.

Do not have Trend Micro, but do have Roboform. I've used alongside the Firefox password manager for many years with no issues. I did try logging out of it, but it didn't help.

Roboform also disables the Firefox Password Manager because only one Password Manager can be active at the time.

See:

The behavior described by you is by design in Chrome and Firefox.
A user can disable RoboForm extension to enable the built-in password manager in the browser.
The user is intended to use either at a time, not both.

If you're sure that RoboForm Password Manager isn't the culprit

Would you disable it please and see if that will make a difference  ?

Disabled Roboform and the "ask to save logins and passwords" will not stay checked.

As I said, I've used Roboform alongside the Firefox password manager for at least 6 or 7 years. I may have to switch to the Edge browser as they both work there. I hate the thought...

You're not in private browsing mode, and disabled RoboForm, and yet the 'Ask to save logins and passwords for sites' keeps getting unchecked ....

Dammit... I hoped that would work. I deleted three .js files, restarted Firefox and checked the "ask to save logins and passwords for sites." I exited Firefox and started it again. The save logins options was unchecked again.

I give up. I guess I'll have to go to Edge. The password manager there is working perfectly with Roboform just like Firefox used to. *sigh*

Thank you so much for trying to help. If there is anything else I can try, please let me know.

There was a pref.js file and a pref-1 and pref-2 file that I deleted.

I use the resident Windows Defender and Malwarebytes Premium malware software. I'll check that about:policies page.

Sorry, I had company all day today. When I went to the about:policies page, there was nothing listed under "active." When I clicked on "documentation," they were all listed. But in Active, the page was blank.

Well, the refresh finally did the trick! Yay! Edge was driving me nuts. I keep my browsers free of all but one or two add-ons and had not made any changes or additions there - first thing I checked was for a rogue add-on.

So, I've got no idea what conflict there was, but I am very glad to have my Firefox back. THANK YOU!

Huge disappointment ......  :(

As I haven't been able to solve your problem after all : You can remove the Chosen Solution mark from my post by clicking on the 'Undo' button to the right of that post.

Question though : Why do you prefer to use RoboForm Password Manager over Firefox's Password Manager  ? I hate to see you switch to Edge because of this .....  :(

Firefox password manager is fine as it is... I have a Firefox account and can use it across multiple platforms. However, Roboform is much more robust and I can store identities and information that I use extremely often as I live out in the country and order a lot of stuff online.

I checked and Firefox v.64.0 was released on December 4th which is exactly when this started. So I have to think Firefox has caused this. I also hate to see me switch to Edge because of this, but if Firefox has made this change which does not allow me to choose which password manager to use, that's what I will have to do. This has already caused me no end of problems with my bank and other websites.

As of the release of v. 64.0, I can no longer use Roboform with the Firefox password manager as I have been doing for many years - probably at least seven years. The option to "Ask to save passwords for logins and website" will no longer stay checked. I spent several days with the assistance of McCoy on the support forum and finally refreshed Firefox. As soon as Roboform was removed, the Firefox password manager started working as before. But I also want to use Roboform for the other features it has such as Identities etc. I have been forced to start using Edge where the Edge password manager and Roboform work just fine together like Firefox used to. I HATE moving to Edge, but until this is fixed I will have to.

Maybe this RoboForm article will help? https://help.roboform.com/hc/en-us/articles/360003494271-My-RoboForm-extension-isn-t-working-in-Firefox-Windows-

Thank you so much for your response. Unfortunately, it does not address the problem. My RoboForm works perfectly. It's the Firefox password manager which will no longer work with RoboForm. Even though I'm not logged in to RoboForm, the Firefox option to "Ask to save passwords for logins and websites" will no longer stay checked if RoboForm is installed in the browser. However, it is working perfectly with the Edge password manager as used to be the case with Firefox prior to the last update.
