Hi bekam92:

Regarding Firefox installing software for Netflix:

Netflix uses Digital Rights Management ("DRM") on its videos. To play DRM-protected video, Firefox needs to install Widevine, a plugin from Google. See: Watch DRM content on Firefox.

You should only need to install Widevine once. Is Firefox having problems installing it?

Regarding crashes:

Here are my first two suggestions:

(A) Share your Crash Reports

If you are getting the Mozilla Crash Reporter form, your Firefox may have logged some data that would help track down the cause of the problem. You can submit that data to Mozilla and share it with forum volunteers to see whether it points to the solution. Please check the support article "Firefox crashes - asking for support" for steps to get those crash report IDs from the about:crashes page, and then post some of the recent ones here.

(B) Test in Firefox's Safe Mode

Firefox's Safe Mode temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features of Firefox that might make it more prone to crashing on some systems.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any less crashy?

Firefox 64 should automatically upgrade Widevine from version 1.4.9.1088 to 4.10.1196.0. On some systems, the download gets blocked for unknown reasons. In that case, you may need to go through a detailed process of manual installation.

You probably won't bother, but in case you decide to try it:

Download the current version for 64-bit Windows:

https://redirector.gvt1.com/edgedl/widevine-cdm/4.10.1196.0-win-x64.zip

If you can't download, the redirect might be blocked. Check whether any of your add-ons or any external software block redirects. You also could test downloading in another browser.

Extract and install the contents of the ZIP archive as follows:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, on the Profile Folder row, click the "Open Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.

Select and copy the folder name: gmp-widevinecdm

Right-click a blank area of the list > New > Folder, then paste the folder name and click away. Then double-click into the new folder.

Select and copy the folder name: 4.10.1196.0

Right-click a blank area of the list > New > Folder, then paste the folder name and click away. Then double-click into the new folder.

Finally you can drop the contents of the ZIP archive here:

  • LICENSE.txt
  • manifest.json
  • widevinecdm.dll
  • widevinecdm.dll.lib
  • widevinecdm.dll.sig

Presumably Firefox will discover that at your next startup, but possibly you would also need to create some settings.

Here are custom settings I see:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste wide and pause while the list is filtered

  • media.gmp-widevinecdm.abi = x86_64-msvc-x64
  • media.gmp-widevinecdm.version = 4.10.1196.0

If version has the old number, you can double-click it and edit it to the new value.

If you need to create these preferences from scratch:

(A) Select and copy the name (B) right-click a blank area of the list, click New, then String (C) In the dialog that comes up, paste the name and click OK (D) For the value, you can type the real value or just enter any character and click OK, then copy the real value, double-click to edit, and replace the temporary text with the real text and click OK
