Predictable crashing

Firefox crashes about once a week. When it does, it resets as though it were a fresh install. My previous session, my "profile" and my new-tab page all go away. Yet somehow it retains my history and bookmarks.

This is on Windows 10. I can detect no common factors other then that it usually happens on a restart. As in, I shut the computer down and all is well; yet when I boot up next, firefox has reset. However it does NOT do it on every shut down because the system gets shut down every night. It's only once a week-ish.

Ok, that's odd, but let's try a few things. This is going to be a bit of a scattershot troubleshooting technique, so please do all of these remedies:

  • Uninstall AVG antivirus, along with any other anti-virus that you have installed, and just use the built in Windows Defender (AVG is a poor product that often leads to system instability, plus known security issues, and Windows Defender is far superior).
  • Download Malwarebytes from www.malwarebytes.com, run a full scan, and remove anything it finds. Run these scans monthly.
  • Update your graphics driver. I believe yours will be: https://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/141169
  • Run Windows Update. If Windows 10 1809 is available, please install it. Otherwise, just install all other updates.
  • Finally, after all those steps, see if you can get Firefox to crash again. If it does, try one last step:

Run the Windows memory diagnostic tool to ensure your RAM isn't going bad, https://www.howto-connect.com/windows-10-detect-ram-issues-with-windows-memory-diagnostic-tool/

Please update to Firefox 64, and let us know if there's still crashes there.

Update Firefox to the latest release

Your user agent says you are using Firefox 56. Perhaps you set some custom prefs?

I'd suggest a refresh: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings

If you still see crashes, please give the crash ID's (go to about:config and copy the ID's beginning with bp-)

I'm not sure why there is a "56" tag in my question. I didn't put it there. I'm guessing your site put it in there because that's what it detected I am using. Well I'm using 56 because I got sick of 64 crashing.

Please just take my word for it, it was 64 that was crashing.

I tried refreshing. I also tried different profiles. I tried changing the directory of my profiles. I tried changing the directory of Firefox. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I tried uninstalling and then manually deleting all the things that firefox does not include when it uninstalls. I briefly considered hopping in to regedit and start deleting anything associated with firefox but decided to come here instead.

Can you give me the crash ids? From Firefox 64

more options

In my about:config I have no column marked "ID"s I assume you meant "Preference name" since that appears to be the only searchable field. After searching for "bp-", I found nothing which makes sense because, as I mentioned, I got sick of 64 crashing and uninstalled it.

Sorry, typo lol. I mean about:crashes not about:config

The ones beginning with bp- lead up to July at the latest. It wasn't doing this in July. This is a recent problem. I would have dropped Firefox long ago if it crashed every week since July.

Would the crash reports without bp- help? They all appear to lead to the same page about throttling.

If you click them, do they eventually have bp-?

more options

Yes, although todays is missing and the dates appear to have changed to todays date instead of when they happened. When I was clicking on them, they were spread out over the past month or so.

All of those crashes are with old versions, 63 and so on. do you have any that have happened in 64?

more options

Unfortunately no. Today's is missing. I don't recall when it did its last update (It does it automatically so you may know that better then I) so I can't say when different crashes should have which versions. But, assuming the update didn't break as well, todays should have been whatever is current. (unless you know something I don't *shrug*)

Many of the reports focus on things like EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION_READ EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION_EXEC EXCEPTION_BREAKPOINT

which, after a brief internet search all bring up issues with hardware acceleration and video drivers. I'll update my video drivers, check my acceleration settings and see if that gets me anywhere.

Firefox 64 was released on Tuesday. Please doublecheck that you haven't already updated: Update Firefox to the latest release

more options

Sort of. The moment I installed 56 this morning, it scolded me and DL'd 64 again. The update is waiting for me to restart which I am refusing to do because I'm working on something important and don't want to take any chances.

Once I've saved all my progress and backed everything up, I'll restart. If that doesn't work, I'm sure I'll be back next week.

Ok. It did it again. Here's the report bp-561c6b00-a233-41c5-85a0-548c40181219

OK, I uninstalled AVE and it's been a few weeks now and it hasn't crashed so that must have been it.
