Firefox lost part of my bookmarks

已張貼

I lost quite a few bookmarks from the last 6-7 months in a couple of folders. There may be more but that's what I've noticed so far. I think this happened a few days ago when it was syncing. I have since uninstalled FF on my Android. I have back ups on both json and HTML. The question though is, do the back ups retain the "description" entered for each bookmark? That's important for me.

Needless to say, I'm confused and kinda livid.

The OP is on Windows XP, so isn't affected by changes made to the description field.

You can restore an older compressed .jsonlz4 backup from the bookmarkbackups folder. A JSON backup includes the descriptions.

  • Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Restore

The name of an automatically created JSON bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once. You also see this count in the Restore menu drop-down list.

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.

Thank you. Just to be clear, I think you're saying that the json backup includes the "description" field and information entered in it, but the HTML does not.

The interesting thing is, the automatic json backups created (in the method listed above) are different in size to the manual json backups I've been doing, by a lot (2.5 MB vs 7.5 MB). What gives?

Hi, no idea as do not trust json but do HTML. HTML has them also as I pointed out in my 1st post as you can not drag and drop a json file in to a open tab and expect to see anything.

Both the HTML backup and the JSON backup include the description field.

When you look at the Restore menu in the Library window (see article linked below), what is the pattern in the number of items for automatic backups? In other words, do you see a slow increase over time and then a sudden drop?

Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer

Good point. I see a steady small increase in the number of items over the last two weeks. So basically no idea when I lost those bookmarks in those folders. It may have happened before that.

By the way, since I suspected syncing to be the culprit, how does the syncing work exactly? desktop ---> Android? or Android ---> desktop?

Hi elzach, Firefox keeps "desktop" and "mobile" bookmarks in separate compartments, so you shouldn't have a situation where Android can overwrite desktop bookmarks. However, random glitches happen with Sync that don't conform to logic.

Do you see any evidence of other profile folders that might contain older backup files? These could be either of these locations:

  • Windows Desktop > Old Firefox Data
  • C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

You usually need to set Windows to show hidden files and folders to explore that path:
