On Friday my version of Firefox updated. I now only see the category list of my saved URLs. The actual URLs are missing. I have lost over 200 saved URLs that I have been saving for 8 years. Please help me locate them again! Thank you!

Hi SNYOWL2, Firefox saves up to 15 complete backups of your bookmarks, and the Restore menu lists by date and number of items what is available. Please check the menu as described in the article Ed linked to.

Regarding the current status:

Do you see empty folders in all of these places or are only some of them empty/broken:

  • Classic Bookmarks menu (tap the Alt key to activate the Menu Bar, then drop the Bookmarks menu)
  • Optional Bookmarks Menu toolbar button ()
  • Bookmarks Sidebar (Ctrl+b opens/closes, or use the Sidebars button, etc.)
  • Library window (Ctrl+Shift+b or "Show All Bookmarks")

Hi SNYOWL2, you may be looking in the folder list for adding a new bookmark instead of the list of your current bookmarks. So just in case that's the problem:

You can add the optional new bookmarks menu button () to your toolbar using either of these methods:

(A) Use the Customize panel (Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars) to drag the icon to the desired spot on the toolbar

(B) Use the method from Bookmarks in Firefox - section entitled: How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?

  • Click the "Library" button:
  • Click "Bookmarks"
  • Click "Bookmarking Tools"
  • Click "Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar"

When I follow both of these suggestions what opens up is the bookmark categories list. The URLS are missing. They used to be listed underneath the category. I have been saving bookmarked URLs for 8-10 years. I have over 200 that are now lost. I can add new bookmarks to my sidebar list, but I am reluctant to start adding them back, because I do not know how they disappeared in the first place.

Firefox automatically saves a daily backup of the user's bookmarks; like 15 backups by default.

Please see this support article to learn how to restore one of those backups: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/restore-bookmarks-from-backup-or-move-them

Pick one from before you noticed that issue / loss of the URL's.

Saving the last 15 items that I bookmarked is not helpful if I had saved over 200 over 8 - 10 years.. Can you tell my why all of a sudden 10 days or so ago, all of my saved URLs disappeared and only the "table of contents " category list remains.

This is what my bookmark side bar looks like. I used to have URLS under each one. They are all empty. What would have caused them to disappear. Is there someway to retrieve all of them. not just the last 15. Thanks

Hi SNYOWL2, that's a very odd screenshot!

If you click a folder that does not have an icon in the left column and press the right-arrow key, does it show any content in the folder? Or if you click just to the left of the folder icon where there is supposed to be a > control to expand the folder, does that work?

Is there someway to retrieve all of them. not just the last 15.

Please, please, please, look at the Restore menu as mentioned twice before and see how many items are in your bookmark backups. Normally it would be dozens, hundreds, maybe thousands, but we cannot see that from here, only you can check it. Here's that article again for reference:

Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer

I do not have any contents to any folder

When I click on restore I see a number of dates listed and between 85 and 93 items listed on each one.

Even before last Friday, nothing higher? That's hard to explain if you have so many folders PLUS 200 bookmarks in the folders.

Do you want to create a backup of what you have now? Perhaps that's not useful. If you do, use the Backup command (next to Restore) first, then restore the most promising-looking backup and see what you get. It will completely replace your current set of bookmarks/folders.

I am a volunteer editor for Waze. On any given day I open many URLs to check on businesses and other information I need to make my Waze edits. I think if I choose a day and restore, i will get those URLs I used on that given day. What I would like to see are the ones that used to appear on the screenshot that I showed you. For instance ion my Waze folder I had probably close to 100 URLs that link to our instruction Wazeopedias pages. These are my reference material that instruct me how to edit.

I think that it was around September 10th that my saved URLs disappeared. (Actually I think the Friday before the 10th) I am at a loss as to how they disappeared. Was there a Firefox change that would have caused that?
I would like to start saving these again, if possible, but Since I do not know how they disappeared, I am a little leery to save them in Firefox. I don't want this to happen again.

Thanks
