webmail won't fully open then page hangs

more options

Hi everyone.

Awkward problem. Ever since FF auto uploaded to version 58.02..... Webmail won't completely open, only half page appears then system hangs. The complex part is which of it is creating the problem. I've done so many complete FF restarts, the so annoying refreshing; Cookies flushed out; Addon's disabled and in safe mode the same problem. The list continues. However using M Explorer it does fully open, so the problem is somewhere browser orientated. The IE gateway isn't an issue as other programs can be opened. Can anyone explain what is going on ?

Hi Rich, is it one of the popular sites like Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo mail?

Do you notice a pattern of slow or frozen loading on other sites, or just webmail?

Could you try loading the site in a private window with Tracking Protection enabled? That will block some of the content and help diagnose whether those third party elements could be causing the problem. More info: Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history and What happened to Tracking Protection?.

Also, if you use Avast or AVG, make sure you have this week's update; the previous update could cause extreme slowness in Firefox.

Taa for replying. Speed is normal on other sites. I think you are on to something here....Changed tracking protection on ALWAYS. I will trick this, as I found this as only in private windows. This is what happens when FF goes for a wash-out and reload, this tracking protection changes. AV bug manager is Malwarebytes prem

At the moment it works. Send a beer over

Change mind...shutdown and cold restart ...sorry, the same problem as before. So it can't be with the tracking.

It's definitely something up with FF as MS Explorer webmail access is virtually instantaneous. The F5 function doesn't do anything.

You haven't mentioned what site it is... If a site is generally known to work in Firefox, these are general suggestions to try when it stops working normally:

Cache and Cookies: When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes. If you do not see the number going down on the page, you can reload it using Ctrl+r to check progress.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Cookies" button

In the dialog that opens, the current site should be pre-filled in the search box at the top of the dialog so you can remove that site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox's Safe Mode: In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

Sorry to disappoint, tried all these. I've even used the diagnosis from my server provider; it finds nothing wrong with site download . Of course it won't, til the password handshake. The problem I am finding with an attempted webmail log is email page only just opens with a header, content doesn't come up as page, isn't loading and system hangs. Depressing F5 comes with with FF sending back info and then a bit more happens. There's a handshake with FF not performing with (my) host webmail account. I've done all the emptying cache, safe mode and rubbed the complete FF history stuff yonks ago, to No effect. I'm convinced the problem is somewhere in FF. I know FF stores browser bookmark sites, but I'm mighty hesitant to go further refresh the entire lot. It shouldn't be necessary. HW acceleration is off. I'm getting very stuck, but I'm becoming rather convinced it's a security issue too as a parameter isn't right.

Does your email service provider support Firefox and confirm that the site works in Firefox 58?

Do you want to check for error messages in the Web Console? See: https://developer.mozilla.org/docs/Tools/Web_Console

Server provider has No problem with FF58. As for the developer stuff, pass! For the moment I will have to be content in going via the long way round using second browser for webmail access. It isn't ideal until FF comes up with a fix. BTW I'm on Win8. One should be able to put the webmail provider string (as I've always done) directly in the opening site space in FF, page then auto opens and just complete the username password formality, but FF doesn't like the next move. Das problem.

Anyway, thanks for assist but this one is for the compilers to think about.

Compilers??

I don't know who is going to fix compatibility with a site you won't name. Any mind readers in the house?

Sorry,..... www.swisscom.ch is the provider.

I started here:

https://www.swisscom.ch/en/residential.html

Clicked the "E-mail+SMS" tab near the top and was redirected to this login page:

https://login.sso.bluewin.ch/login?SNA=webmail&RURL=https%3A%2F%2Frich-v02.bluewin.ch%2Fcp%2Fapplink%2Fsso%2FServiceEntryHandler%3Fd%3Dbluewin.ch%26l%3Den%26m%3Dfalse&L=en

(Example screenshot attached)

Is the problem on that page?

Correct.....saving the page login is the problem. FF doesn't like it. What's the difference ? Go the other way round via MS Explorer, I can copy the string and it all works. mystery.

I'm not sure if that's a new problem, or the problem is that the page still does not load completely for you. Do you mean there is a problem with either (A) saving your username and password in Firefox's password manager, or (B) creating a bookmark to that page?

Are there problems on other parts of the https://www.bluewin.ch/ site?

Their technicians maintain their access has no current issues. I appear to be a 'problem' but it isn't theirs ! Insist issues are with FF. The problem goes further than A & B. Login via Chrome & IE explorer those are faster. I've cleared out FF files so many times. Instead of copying the login to the FF start up search bar, I will just have to go via their site Email+SMS tab..

At least you have a workaround. Not sure we will figure out why they work differently if your pasted URL was identical to the URL after you click the Email+SMS tab.
