How can I stop Firefox from stupidly updating?
Hello, I've gone through various steps to prevent Firefox 56.0.01 from updating to the newer, more disgusting 57+ version.
The reason I want to prevent this is mainly because the (legacy) add-on tools I require do not work on the newer version. The old Firefox is superior for my purposes, even for things like watching streamed content, the new FF offers a nasty green bar through the top and bottom of some, but not all, videos. However, I don't require a 'fix' for this, it doesn't bother me that much (since everything works fantastic on FF 56).
Here's the steps I've gone through to prevent the nasty FF 57 from updating: - I installed Firefox 56 to another drive and modified the name to 'Firefox (old)' - I made a separate profile called 'old' with the necessary options such as 'never check for updates' and unchecked the use of a background service. Automatically update search engines is disabled too. - I also created a shortcut, pointing it to the 'old' profile, so that profile is loaded immediately after opening this shortcut. - I deleted 'Mozilla Maintenance Service' folder in the programs installation directory.
I also have these options set this way in about:config - app.update.auto - false - app.update.enabled - false - app.update.silent - false - network.prefetch-next - false - network.dns.disablePrefetch - true
Now, it's important to note that Firefox 56 is still working on my computer, it's still functional, not only this but it worked FLAWLESSLY for about a week but now; my problem is that every time I open it, Windows presents me with a UAC prompt where if I click yes, Firefox will FORCE update 57+ on to my computer. For this reason I must click 'No' on the UAC prompt and Firefox opens and then says "Firefox couldn't update :( Download new version here" on a notification pop-up in the top corner. Can someone explain to me why the developers are of such poor intelligence or; are effectively lying to the customer about being able to 'never check for updates'? And please can someone review the steps I've taken and tell me if I've missed something? Maybe someone better informed than I can tell me how to stop this dirty update system once and for all.

You know Firefox 56 is not secure. Now that we have that out of the way:
I have not tested your settings and do not have any new suggestions for you about them. Bear in mind that starting Firefox in another profile (with default settings) will trigger an update check, which is always a possibility if "old" is not the current default profile and you launch an external link.
To remove a update that has already downloaded but not yet installed:
Open the updates folder by pasting the following path into the Windows 7 Start menu search box and pressing Enter:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Mozilla\updates
That should expand to the hidden folder:
C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\Mozilla\updates
Here you can see folders for any staged updates that will install on your next Firefox restart. If you see any folders here, go ahead and remove them.

Did you change your Privacy&Security setting or General to notify you of update before this happened?

The settings have always been set to 'Never check for updates (not recommended)' with 'Use a background service to install updates' and 'Automatically update search engines' disabled.
No changes have been made to any options since the first run and first configuration of the settings to my likings (aka disabling FF 57 updates at any cost.)

5 STAR post. You've successfully fixed my problem, no more UAC prompt and no more annoying pop-up notification. Big thanks for your assistance, is there anything extra I must do to prevent this scenario from repeating itself?

I've always set Firefox to "Check for updates but let you choose to install them" and that has always worked for me. I don't have experience with other settings such as the ones you prefer.
