Bluescreens when loading Youtube

more options

When loading the first Youtube video of the day, I have a 95% chance of 15 seconds of loading screen and silence, and the a Bluescreen (BSOD) on my PC. After the first time it's fine until I restart my pc / the next day. I've done some testing to try to resolve this but so far no luck. Here's what I've tried & tested:

1. This began with Firefox Quantum which is on 57.0.2 (64-bit). Previous versions were fine. 2. Chrome has no trouble and has never caused this crash. 63.0.3239.84 (Official Build) (64-bit) 3. Netflix & Dailymotion play fine, which makes me think the basic video drivers should be ok. 4. My AV is current and reports no troubles - ESET 10.1.210.0, last updated an hour ago (auto update) 5. I turned off my Firefox extensions one by one. Reddit Enhanced Suite never caused a problem, but it crashed with Disconnect, Ghostery, and UBlock Origin individually and as a group. 6. I made a new Firefox profile and this seemed to solve it for 3 days. Now the new profile is crashing as well. 7. Crashes have always recovered to the otherwise normal base state with no loss. Today's crash is the first exception, where Firefox not only crashed but actually reset entirely. My imported bookmarks and extensions are now totally gone. (Saved as backups on my desktop but not yet loaded.) 8. I'm running Windows 10 64-bit and when signed into YouTube I use the Dark theme. I'm not doing anything else to YouTube (no specific extensions).

Usually Blue Screens in Win 10 give a Error Message. Was there any ?

Usually this is a Video Card Driver issue : Radeon (TM) RX 480 Graphics driverDate: 8-30-2016 though I see no errors see if can update please : https://support.amd.com/en-us/download

ESET + Firefox + Windows updates are not playing nice together. Check : Settings --> Updates & Security --> View Installed Update History and find out when you last updated and what the KB# is. Is it close to when issues started ? If so check ESET support page with the KB#'s and Firefox Version #. and just google all 3 in a search and see if any results.

Yes there are issues for some people with those Extensions. Try to update them from the Tool --> Addons --> Extension page by going to page top and click the gear Icon.

Please check Desktop for a Folder called OldFirefoxData, it will have you Profile in there which holds passwords and bookmarks.

oops...ok is there, do not load as maybe corrupted and that is the reason it was dumped there. You will need help with the files, I am not the one to do that. But : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles and https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data and https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recover-lost-or-missing-bookmarks and https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/recovering-important-data-from-an-old-profile

Ok so the crashing is then because of your profile and it needs to be worked on.

I'm not a fan of Win 10 blue screens, they aren't nearly as informative as older ones. However, yes, it does list an IRQ issue with a graphics driver. I'm running Radeon Software Version 16.8.3. There is an update available for this, but when I had previously had either 17.11.1 or 17.11.4, I would loose output on my monitor on any modern 3d game - everything went black and I had to hard reset the PC. The 16.8.3 drivers never gave me this problem. I'm leery of going back to those drivers.

Meanwhile, I did check my update history. Everything appears to have downloaded and installed correctly - nothing is listed as having any problems. Sadly, there seems to have been a fair number of updates in early November. We have many possible suspects for a bad update.

The corrupted profile info makes a lot of sense. The problem went away on a new profile. One of the first things I did was to re-install my old bookmarks once that started working. I don't normally use my bookmarks much though, so I suppose I could simply make another new profile and not load that data. That said, I would like to be able to use them someday, and nothing there obviously looked off. Are you aware of any tools that I might use to check/verify that data? Otherwise I'm looking at manually going back to every bookmark and re-saving it.

I've managed to get the black screen issue to happen again after extended play on Subnautica. Thought I was done with that. I'm still reluctant to upgrade my graphics drivers but I might not have much choice. I've also had one more bluescreen caused by a youtube video, though one in a weeks time is much less than it had been. I still have not re-loaded any of my old profile info. All that leaves that I've done is add the two add ons - which ought to be compatible.

Here is the topmost portion of the dump file. I'm not sure exactly how much might be necessary.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (d1) An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is usually caused by drivers using improper addresses. If kernel debugger is available get stack backtrace. Arguments: Arg1: ffffe0011f0d000c, memory referenced Arg2: 0000000000000007, IRQL Arg3: 0000000000000000, value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation Arg4: fffff80e6b8eeeae, address which referenced memory

You can get a blue-screen crash on Windows 10 without having to restart Windows?

One way to reduce Firefox's dependency on your graphics card drivers is to disable hardware acceleration. To test whether this makes any difference in the "first run" scenario, you would need to set and save this before your next startup. See: Firefox's performance settings.
