How can I prevent Firefox upgrading(!) to ver 57 in November 2017?

Many of my legacy Add-ins are invaluable in my text correction work as a volunteeer on the Australian Newspaper site TROVE.

I must not allow FF to upggrade to 57.

HOW DO I DO THIS, PLEASE?

You can switch to the Firefox 52 ESR version to be able to use legacy extensions and still receive security updates. Current is Firefox 52.3.0 ESR:

So far this is the only solution I have found that works to keep FF from upgrading regardless of other settings.

There are two stables releases of Firefox:

  • Regular Release: Firefox 56, which will update to 57, then 58, then 59
  • Extended Support Release: Firefox 52 ESR, which will stay largely the same until Firefox 59 ESR is released around next June (actually Firefox 59 ESR will become available earlier, but Firefox 52 ESR will reach the end of its life around June)

If you feel that Firefox 57 is not ready for you, or you're not ready for it, you can switch to the ESR release and cross your fingers that Firefox 59 will offer the missing features you're hoping for.

Type about:preferences#advanced<enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select Update. Check the settings.

Also turn off Use a background service to install updates

The opening question states, "I must not allow FF to upggrade to 57. "

Is the upgrade to Firefox 57 going to be automatic??

Or will the upgrade be a choice??

I still have problems like Not Responding and Crashing (yes, I did every recommendation, including Start All Over!)

57 will all great new stuff, but will it fix common old problems??!

I have Firefox 56.0 64 bit up to date

Is it still trying to update, or other problems?

I will not be updating to 57. I tried it on beta and went back to version 55.0.3 because I can't use classic theme restorer in version 57. So I will not update to it.. 57 was horrible hated it.

I think if you go to into optinons and then advanced and chose never update it should work.

Could you start a new question about those issues? This one mostly seems to be about how to change the update settings and whether the changes work.

You can use this link, then scroll down past suggested articles to continue with the form (unless one looks especially relevant):

https://support.mozilla.org/questions/new/desktop/fix-problems

Regarding crashes in particular, if you are getting the Mozilla Crash Reporter form, your Firefox may have logged some data that would help track down the cause of the problem. You can submit that data to Mozilla and share it with forum volunteers to see whether it points to the solution. Please check the support article "Firefox crashes - asking for support" for steps to get those crash report IDs from the about:crashes page, and then post some of the recent ones in your new thread.
