NewTab customize page that is shown
Firefox 55
What is the method to change the page that is displayed when opening a new tab to a local file?

Sorry, but the New Tab Override extension has been updated to use the more restricted WebExtensions API for Firefox 57 compatibility and can no longer show a local page (a page whose address starts with file://) on the new tab page.
As a "two-click" workaround you can pin your local page in the first tile position on the built-in new tab page. See: Customize the New Tab page.
Or if you display the Bookmarks Toolbar you can bookmark your local page on the bar and Ctrl+click or middle-click the bookmark to launch it in a new tab.
Or of course you could post the page somewhere you can access it using an http:// or https:// URL.
Hopefully one of those will tide you over until someone comes up with a better way.

With Firefox 41 (and higher), it's no longer possible to customize the page shown in a new tab via changing the preference browser.newtab.url in about:config. Because of the fact that hijackers abused the preference in the past, Mozilla decided to remove it (see bug 1118285). Fortunately, by removing it, Mozilla also introduced a new API to bring this functionality back to life as an add-on. This add-on allows the user to choose a certain page in a new tab.
New Tab Override (browser.newtab.url replacement) https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/
This is also available using Classic Theme Restorer (Customize Australis) {web link} Restore squared tabs, appmenu, add-ons bar, small button view and more on Australis UI (Windows/MacOSX/Linux + Fx 29+).
If there is still a problem,
V55 has been giving users problems. Reinstall v54.

If you still want to downgrade, look under; I still want to downgrade. Click the Directory of other versions and languages link. Look for the directory of the version that you want. But, remember that old versions may have security issues.
