Firefox is shutting down instead of going to sleep and it's shutting down the whole computer. What's going on?
If I leave my computer for longer than 10 minutes, instead of going to sleep (as it should) Firefox shuts down and the whole computer shuts down with it. Then, 15 minutes later, it will start the whole computer on its own! From another room, I can hear the distinctive F# Major chord that indicates "start up" in all Apple computers, When I return to my computer - say 3 hours later - I click the return key. Instead of waking up the computer (as it should), I hear the distinctive chord of Apple indicating "start-up" and the whole computer comes to life and access to Firefox is only through a box on the screen that says "Firefox has shut down. We're so sorry. Click on the box below to start your Firefox again" - or something to that effect. So that's what I do in order to get to work again. Why is it doing this? Grateful for your kind attention.

Even if Firefox should crash, this wouldn't cause the computer to shut down also.
Check your computer's screen saver settings. Disable screen saver. Is the problem still there?
I don't know how to "disable" screen saver. I've put it to "never" but there's no button that says "disable screen saver". The computer is still shutting down when Firefox crashes. I know you said it shouldn't but it does. The whole computer shuts down when Firefox shuts down.

That is how you do it. Different systems have different types settings.

The problem is still there. Thanks for your kind assistance with my problem, though.
When Firefox crashes, it takes the whole computer with it. Later, when I lift the lid of my laptop to start working (as if it's been asleep), Firefox starts the computer and then posts the "error" post.
I've not had any problems with Firefox crashing while I'm using it, only when I think it should be asleep.

What's the difference between "shutting down" and "crashing"? I thought they were interchangeable terms for the same thing. Here are the latest crashes. Since the dates of the last few days aren't here, these must not be crashes that I'm experiencing, but mine are shutting down.

I've submitted the first four crash reports. But mine is doing this three/four times a day!

Closing a program is like turning off a light. Crashing is the light blowing up.
But when a program closes on its own is that "crashing" or "shutting down"?
There are no recent BP numbers except the ones that I've submitted. Once I've submitted a crash report. a BP numbers shows up in the "submitted crash reports" See below:

OK, so I've updated to the newest version of Firefox 53.0.3
The result of this is that the computer still shuts down instead of sleeping but when I started it up this time, Firefox didn't "apologize" because all the links were still in place and I didn't have to "restore" anything.
But the computer is still shutting down instead of sleeping.
Is this only when Firefox is running?

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.
Thank you for these links. From what I can understand (and that's not much), I've gone through all these malware fixes and the problem is still there.
Yes, it only happens when Firefox is running. I leave the computer for 20 minutes, I come back and the whole computer has crashed. I can get it started again by clicking either return or the normal start key. That seems weird - using return key to start the computer - I usually use return key to wake up the computer. There's sometimes a 10 second wait after clicking the return key, but it does start up - the famous F# Major chord. Then I get the traditional Firefox message asking if I want to restore the 4-6 sites I had open. I click restore and everything is fine.
Am I harming my computer by doing all these startups every day?
Do you still believe my computer might have been invaded by malware of some sort?

In addition to the problem already articulated, I noticed today that Firefox isn't listed as "open" in the list of major programs in my computer. When programs are "in use" they have an arrow pointed at them. Firefox is currently "in use" and there's no arrow. FYI
