telling me to update Firefox.
How can I avoid this, obviously phising/spam/Trojan horse, whatever?

Running an adblocker like uBlock Origin would help immensely and for one more added measure, use Popup Blocker (strict) and disable Firefox's built in popup blocker as Popup Blocker Strict is more effective. Another added bonus is that its a WebExtension.
