Why can't I get Firefox to update on my Mac? I keep getting sent to the same useless page in this support section - I need help that works!
I have followed the instructions in the support section very carefully and still cannot get Firefox to update. I did see the note that the person who is the admin or the person who installed Firefox is the only person who can update it. That would be me and me alone, and I've exhaustively checked my Mac's settings and preferences and everything else I can think of. I'm new to Mac so I may well have missed something important during set-up...........but I can't figure out or find what that may be. Whenever I follow the link on the support page that says I can update, all it does is download the updated version of Firefox, not an update. I don't want to start all over and lose all of my bookmarks and developer tools just because something isn't working. I realize it is probably something rather simple, but I just seem to be missing it and I've passed the frustration point now. :) Thanks for any assistance in getting this straightened out!

I went to that link, that just takes me to a page to download Firefox all over again. I don't want to do that, I just want to update the version that is running on my Mac right now. Surely there is a way to do that without having to download and reinstall Firefox every time a security update comes out...........I'd never get any work done and I would constantly lose all of my bookmarks and developer tools......not an option! :)
If you were to get it by internal update it will be a full complete patch and not a partial patch. Partial patches to 51.0.1 is only as far back at 50.0.2 as you can see in https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/51.0.1/update/mac/en-US/
Sorry, that just doesn't make sense in answering my issue. Internal update? Complete patch? I'm not a Firefox programmer so I don't know what any of that means. I just need to have my currently running version of Firefox to update itself as it is supposed to on my new Mac. It isn't. I've tried everything suggested in Firefox material in the support section, I've tried old Windows tricks, I just can't get an update to happen. I rely on Firefox on this Mac, not Safari, and I really don't want to abandon all of my work just because of this issue. There HAS to be a simple solution - a setting not quite right in the OS, in Firefox something similar. I am new to Mac, but not a complete idiot to computers. Have used Firefox for many years and don't wish to change!
If it helps anyone reading, after Firefox has binged me about 20 times telling me I have to update (and can't) a random box comes up that says I have to be the administrator to update - I am the administrator on this machine, but for some reason Firefox can't/won't recognize that fact. I can't figure out why. This is the hair-pulling part. I need my secure updates to protect what I do.
An update changes the code of the current program so it is the same as the full installer. Normally, this takes little internet time to download.
Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar. Then Help > About Firefox will tell you what version have and check for updates.

The full installer loads the whole program and installs it onto your system (Making needed system changes and such). Normally, once a program is installed, it just needs to be updated now and then to keep it up to date.
I already have Firefox running on this Mac. Has been for quite a few months. The provided link I have been to dozens of times hoping that someone will update the links within that section, as they don't take a person where they need to go. That said - again, my issue is that Firefox will not update, despite the fact that I have it set to update automatically. I tried downloading the full installer that you are pointing out - I got an error message from my machine telling me that I could not install a second Firefox as one is already running on this machine. Every attempt to install the update manually has failed as the links within the Firefox help section just keep taking me back to download a whole new Firefox program. So really, all I've been doing for weeks trying to do a simple update is chase my tail in small tight circles. Interestingly, I am also running Thunderbird on this Mac, and it has no issue at all with updating itself.

Did you try shutting down the browser?
Reboot the computer and try the full installer again.
Did that. More than once while on this odyssey of trying to get everything to play together correctly. I've restarted, shut down the computer for an entire day, I've done everything I can think of. It is Firefox Update that is the issue, or one single little setting that applies to Firefox only as it functions on the Mac. I've eliminated every other possible scenario. Including OHS. :)
But, please explain, why would I want to install a second Firefox on this machine - or any other? What a pain in the backside to try to figure out how to transfer years' worth of bookmarks, add-ons such as FTP.......why would I want to do that every time Firefox updates? How so very counter-productive!!!! That would send anyone and everyone running away from Firefox......and I don't think that is the intention of Firefox. There has to be a very simple solution to this..........no other third party program has this sort of issue with updating on this machine, just Firefox. :(
