"recently closed tabs" and "recently closed windows" are greyed out under history. How do I correct?

Under the history column the "recently closed tabs" and "recently closed windows" options are grayed out. How can I restore their functionality??

Probably your Waterfox has been set to never remember History, or maybe you are even in Private Browsing mode. See
