There are two settings;

• When Firefox Starts

When the browser is started, what do you want to display? Many of us choose Show My Home Page.

• Home Page

When a new page is opened, what do you want to be displayed?

1. Use Current Page. Use what ever page(s) are open at that time.
2. Use Bookmark
3. Restore To Default. about:home shows a Mozilla home page with tools.

You can use any of these that you wish;

about:home (Firefox default home page), about:newtab (shows the sites most visited), about:blank (a blank page),

or you can enter any webpage or about: page you want.

Note that not all removal programs will detect all malware, so you may need to run several or all of them.

For security reasons, from Firefox 41, browser.newtab.url no longer works. To make changes to the New Tab page you need to use an add-on such as -

• New Tab Override (browser.newtab.url replacement). Once installed, open the Add-ons Manager (Ctrl+Shift+A) > Extensions, then look for New Tab Override and click on Options to set your preference.

• Custom New Tab.

Note, if you only want the New Tab to be the same as your home page, you can use New Tab Homepage instead.

You may then need to restart Firefox for any changes to take effect.

Reset the browser: Click Tools button → Click? (Help Menu) → Select Troubleshooting Information → Click Refresh Firefox → Click Finish button → Restart Mozilla Firefox. Run regedit.exe and delete relevant registry entries (steps detailed in a blog )
