Refreshing has not helped the pc, it continues to intermittently freeze with a dialog box saying unresponsive script, choices are continue, debug, stop script.

Problem is intermittent freezing, dialog box appears saying unresponsive script, choices are 1, continue, 2,stop script, 3,debug. It eventually clears itself and then comes back. Refresh did not work, the suggestion to try about.config did not follow to the instructions given---I'll be careful, never showed up. Is there a tech person to talk with me?

Hi Linda586, there are many different reasons this could occur. It sounds as though you already have seem this help article:

Warning Unresponsive script - What it means and how to fix it

Another common cause of unresponsive script errors on Windows 7 is the protected mode feature of the Flash player plugin. That feature has security benefits, but seems to have serious compatibility issues on some systems. You can disable it using the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. On the right side, find "Shockwave Flash" and click the More link. Then uncheck the box for "Enable Adobe Flash protected mode" and try that for a day to see whether it helps.

Speaking of plugins, the Question Details > More System Details section next to your question lists two version of the Flash player plugin:

  • Shockwave Flash 21.0 r0
  • Shockwave Flash 12.0 r0

This could cause confusion on sites using Flash; the older one should be removed.

The official method is to do a full uninstall/reinstall of Flash. You can find a link to Adobe's uninstaller in this article: https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html

But... it usually works to just physically remove the older file. To discover its location, type or paste about:plugins in the address bar and press Enter. You can use Find (Ctrl+f) for npswf to skip to the entries for Flash. Each should list the full path on disk.

On 64-bit Windows, the normal location is:

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash

If you go into that folder, be careful to delete ONLY the specific unwanted file listed in about:plugins because the others may be needed by other programs.

Does it mention a specific script in the alert?

Can you attach a screenshot?

  • Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot
  • Make sure that you do not exceed the maximum size of 1 MB
