Running Firefox 44.0.2 on MacMini - OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) only extension running Pinterest PinIt button

Restarted Mac today and realized the Firefox Bookmarks Toolbar as displayed horizontally across the top, had resorted in some odd order.. appears to be alphabetical, from Library view. No amount of resorting "by Added" will stick.

I understand that Library view sorting is only temporary as viewed in Library pane, but >>>how did I lose my preferred order of "by Added" to start with??? <<<

Reading up, I backed up bookmarks as .html and .JSON and also copied and stored a version of the then-current places.sqlite- - shut down, removed places.sqlite from Library>Application Support>Firefox and restarted.

Same problem. Bookmarks Toolbar displays in alpha sort order. Read kz mozillazine corrupt localstore.rdf, learned that localstore.rdf has been replaced by xulstore.JSON since FF 34. Again closed FF, copied, removed and stored a copy of xulstore.JSON from Library>Application Support>Firefox and restarted. Same alpha display convention in Bookmarks Toolbar...

I should point out that though I have culled these and continue to file them, they number in the 2k range, so dragging to reorder is no option. Ok Laugh. I know. The only other thing I can add is that upon restarting FF after the 2nd Library change (removal of xulstor.JSON) i got an empty startup screen and a chrome warning- Unresponsive Script: Script: chrome://global/content/bindings/text.xml:70

Wishing there were a 'save changes' button somewhere.. Many thanks for all you DO- so many resources available- just amazing!

被選擇的解決方法

ok- though via caveman methods, i just had an oo - OO! moment.

looks like i solved my problem.

here;s the workaround:

it appears that while in Bookmarks Library view, with the BMTB contents showing, that because i can shift back and forth between the Unsorted and Sort by Added orders found in the drop down menu by choosing Four bar menu> Sort> ..

that i can Sort by Added, select a group of links, copy, delete and then sort by Unsorted and Paste them back in, works!

That sequence then does actually show in the by Added order in the BMTB display atop the browser window.

Warning: forgoing the delete in that sequence causes dupes to appear in the Sort by Added view.

of each of the pairs that result if delete is not used, the top link can be deleted from the by Added view, as the 2nd of each instance appears to be the newest added.

that said, deletion is essential after copying a group and before pasting them into the alternate Unsorted view.

tagging the link that i used over and over as the destination for my pasting also helped.

best of luck to others with this problem and many thanks to cor -el for the time and attention!

Can you sort the bookmarks manually by dragging them in the Bookmarks Manager (Library)?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (3-bar button/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: 3-bar button/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Thank you for addressing my questions.

Because it would be easy to replace, prior to your response, I deleted the PinIt Add-on button. Next, remembering a recent Java popup I'd ignored and cked my Java- I'd been running Java 8 Build 65 Update 17, so I upgraded to J8 ug 73 build 02.

After reading your kind response, I restarted in Safe-Mode (no Refresh) found Default theme unavailable (All Add-ons disabled in Safe Mode)

Yes, I can manually move BMTB links both in display at top of browser under URL bar as well as in (Show All Bookmarks) Library Pane view, and after dragging, they do stick, even through restart.

I dumped 1.5k links from BMTB Library Pane View as they were showing up under Most Visited, anyway.

Nothing I have read anywhere - other than addressing potential damaged or corrupt components (sqlite, json, etc) seems to address what could have caused this in the first place, though--

because everything I've found states the only way to actually reorder the BMTB displayed at top of browser references Manual, only. Can you address this please? Any idea how this could've happened?

Again, many thanks for your time and consideration.

Be cautious with removing bookmarks under "Most Visited" because you actually remove these bookmarks completely.

Some information about so called smart bookmarks folders:

  • "Most Visited" and "Recently Bookmarked" and "Recent Tags" are examples of so called Smart Bookmarks folders and are not real existing folders.
  • Smart folders show a list created by a query of the places.sqlite database that stores bookmarks and history in Firefox.
  • Smart folder lists show a maximum of 10 entries by default.
  • Bookmarks and history items that show up in a smart folder list are stored elsewhere in another folder and any changes made are applied to the real bookmark or history item.
  • If you remove an entry then the list is shifted up and a new entry that wasn't shown previously is added to show 10 entries.
  • If you add a new bookmark or visit a website then a new item is added at the top and the entry at the bottom disappears from that list.
  • Items that disappear from the list are not gone, but merely do not show up anymore in that list.
  • Actions like copy & paste or delete that you perform on bookmarks in such a list are done on the original bookmark.

No worries there- thanks, they're all backed up. Still looking for a suggestion as to how this could have happened, or even simply- how to repair it other than what looks to be the only answer left:

uninstalling and reinstalling the application itself.

still unsolved, i'll appreciate any help i can get.

refreshing has not solved this issue. again, I'll emphasize, these questions are in reference to the display across the top of the screen, of the contents of the "Bookmarks Toolbar" - to be clear - NOT the collected folders of bookmarks themselves..

here are my questions:

1. i've seen elsewhere that "as added" is the default sort convention for the Bookmarks Toolbar - is this true?

2. If so, then why would refreshing firefox not reset them from alpbetized to "as added" ?

3. i do not understand if, as a solution, i could find my "old" bookmarks from a prior backup and select only those that were filed in the bookmarks toolbar - then sort those by date and import them?

many thanks : )

Can you drag the bookmarks and folders around to their wanted order, either directly on the Bookmarks Toolbar or in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) like I wrote above?

Doesn't that sorting stay?

Are you using Sync as that can possibly cause issues with bookmarks?

Yes, I can manually move BMTB links both in display at top of browser under URL bar as well as in (Show All Bookmarks) Library Pane view, and after dragging, they do stick, even through restart.

but, as i also said, i'm not interested in manually sorting hundreds of urls back into the list as added order, i'm actually interested in seeing that the browser is returned to its previous, functional, default operating mode. I would like the BMTB to display, in as added order, the bookmarks that i stored there and continue to do so.

i'd also like to know what could be corrupted, that might have caused this.

do you know where the sort order of that particular list is stored, in places.sqlite, xulstore.JSON or elsewhere?

finally,

is it possible to, as a solution, use my "old" bookmarks from a prior backup selecting only those that were filed in the bookmarks toolbar >>> which would still be sorted by "as added" by date and import only those? <<

sorry- missed your last qs again, no sync in use - nor any add-ons.

and though i can reorder the few links that do show across the top pf the browser, and also add new links, both of which remain where placed through a restart- alas, i cannot move any links in the BMTB library view.

something seems to be sticking the toolbar in alpha sort mode. there-has-got-to-be-some-way-of-resetting-this.
