when ever i creat ( or TRY to create) a desktop icon from a mozzila page it puts an icon AND a file folder on the desktop ... all i want is the icon but if i get rid of the file folder the icon disappears... this is really annoying and creates a lot of clutter.

Because you save the webpage (html file+folder with data), you don't create a shortcut. To create a shorcut, drag and drop the favicon of the website to the desktop.

If you mean too many shortcuts on your desktop, create a folder on the desktop. Then put all those shortcuts inside.

Firefox creates two icon on the desktop if you create a internet shortcut. One icon for the main HTML file and a second icon (_files) that stores additional files.

You can look at this extension.

I find re-sizing the page and drag and drop quite fiddly at times and prefer this simple add-on which involves a right and then left click -

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/deskcut/

A "favicon"(favorite icon) is a simple picture symbol, often a brand or logo, that goes with add-ons and applications.

Did you read my above reply that Firefox creates two icons on the desktop?

Windows treats these file as connected files, so if you remove one then the other is automatically removed as well. Managing the File System: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb776887(v=vs.85).aspx

You need an extension if you only want one archive icon that contains all the files.

i did but honestly , i don't believe it in the sense that i shouldn't have to jump thru flaming hoops to do something i do with a single click in ie... someone says there is a drag and drop deal but somebody is going to have to tell me what to drag and drop because i don't see anything that indicates that.

cor-el It seems to me that the original poster only wants a short cut icon to open the relevant web page. Specifically, the OP does not want any file/folder.

stvsxm & alan_r Does this help

Please see Create a desktop shortcut to a website

You drag the favicon or icon (or globe or (i)) whatever it is from the left side of the address bar, to the desktop.

That should create a single item as a shortcut. In Windows if Firefox is set as your default browser the shortcut will have a Firefox icon. Otherwise it may be an IE icon

You will need to be online to view such a shortcut, as the files are not stored locally on the computer.

The alternative is to store the files on the computer in which case you do not get the live content from the internet, you get the content as it was when you stored it.

P.S. Maybe slightly outdated Windows image helps clarify this Website Shortcut

Can you clarify what you want to do?

Do you want to create a internet shortcut on the desktop to open the website in the default browser or do you want to save the web page content, so you can open the page locally without accessing internet?

youre kidding... right ? clarify what ? i want to create a desktop shortcut to a web page without having to invent a new operating system. in ie you right click on the pgae, it asks you if you want to creat a shortcut... you click " yes " and an icon appears on the desktop that stays there forever or until you delete it and takes you DIRECTLY to the page when you click it. takes two seconds. in junkzilla , doing the same thing creats a folder and an icon that works about 50 % of the time and the globe dragging thing diappears periodically and i am using junkzilla as default... how can this be this hard ? i'm not asking how to hack an apple iphone...

May I suggest you read and try the suggestions in my post higher up this thread.

  • Is that what you are trying to do ?
  • Does that work for you ?
    • Or if not what problems do you have with my suggestion ?
What goes wrong & does, or does not, happen when you try that ?

Edit fixed link to my post up-thread.

Hi, I'm just wondering if the folder you are seeing in addition to the icon, would normally be hidden unless you've enabled Hidden files and folders. To check, type Folder Options into the PCs Start Menu search box, click on the result, then View tab > Hidden files and folders, and make sure that 'Don't show hidden files, folders or drives' is selected.

Scribe, That is a good point. I get confused with this thread but I think your answer only applies to saved html files not shortcuts.

I think the OP is trying to create a shortcut to the website, not save the webpage.
